Upgraded from P4 Dual core to AMD Quad core but got no noticable improvement.

I upgraded from P4 E2220 Dual Core CPU and Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2 motherboard to Athlon X4 620 CPU and MA785GM-US2H but my gaming performande didn't improve as expected. I'm using my GTA IV benchmark results to reach this conclusion. GTA IV is supposed to be optimized for multi-core so I expected a considerable improvement in my 21 FPS average. My video card is a 8600GT and I read somewhere that sometimes there are compatibility issues because of the chipsets. Can somebody tell me is this is true and tell me if there is some kind of application to avoid this issue?

Did you reformat after the switch? I'd try reformatting, and see if something improves.

Your videocard is your bottleneck, and a serious one

I know but my GTX260 broke before the upgrade and I got no chance to got a RMA so I had to reinstall the old 8600GT. I suppose that the video card doesn't prevent to get the performance that the two extra cores are supposed to give. Am I right?

Hard to say without knowing your graphics settings.

GTA IV is known to be badly CPU-bound but that said I'd try running the game at a very low resolution and minimum graphics settings before discounting GPU bottlenecking.

I suppose it might also be one of the games which are, significantly, adversely affected by the lack of a L3 cache.

I hate to agree, because its not what you want to hear.

Hermit, the 8600 was never a stellar performer even in its prime. I would say that if your FPS are not improving from the upgrade you did, it most certainly is the graphic card. To what degree is your GTX260 broken I wonder? Is there any possibility of repair?

Sorry but that wasn't what I meant. I meant that I had no time to get a RMA. Now I have the time so I'll get it in the next couple of days. Thanks for your help.

Ya, it's not ur CPU's fault, it's the GPU.

Deltaux is right, that videocard is severely bottlenecking the processors. I'd suggest at least a 4870 or higher GPU.

Once you get the gtx back you should get around a 5000% increase in performance.
