    @gellmar:
    I'm pretty sure it's not your fault: as cadcat said, maya is not benefitting at all from a firepro card, even a "real" one; it seems like every time you crave for more fps the problem is that you're being CPU-constrained

    @terrablader:
    the real v7700 only has one core, and the 2GB of a HD4870x2 are two sets of 1GB, one for each chip, so, in terms of your geometry and textures fitting into that memory, it's just like a HD4870-1GB
    if you value "more ram" more than "more GPU cores", sapphire has HD4870 and HD4890 models (not "x2") with 2GB of RAM (and maybe other vendors have that too)

    @CADCAT:
    I asked you for some benchmarks in some other thread... before I read the new stuff on this one: gellmar's requests have much higher priority

    No prob, I will test it after school ^^

    @GellmaR

    maybe something incorrect with the BIOS dump, made it with GPU-Z!

    @terrablader

    I would also consider a HD4890 with 2GB.. Wanted to test crossfire pro but I only have HD3870 and 4870 which don't work together in crossfire.. But it would be interesting if someone with 2 HD 4870 could test if crossfire pro is working with GellmaRs modded driver..

    Edit:

    Maya bike scene with HD3870 and Catalyst 9.10 - min 20,3 FPS..

    so the question emerges: what benefits has firegl?
    as i recently tested 32 and 64 bit moded and not cards (3870&2600) and posted on other thread, that there is no performance increase in 3ds max. only wireframe test was ~2times faster on max9 with maximum special drivers for 3ds max9, which is no more updated by ati/amd and latest version is for max9 32 and 64bit. but other test were significantly lower ("maximum" drivers uses opengl) but with direct3d drivers there is no difference whether moded or not. and i've been using scripts from the begining and always saving my test on same system.
    i noticed that performance vary depending on 3d settings (generaly i use balanced or high performance with catalyst cc)
    maybe if there were more accurate tests, we'll se some insignificant differences, but overall i made a conclusion that there is no need for softmoding unless you use special drivers, wich are abandoned by ati :( (meanwhile nvidia keeps updating maxtreme drivers)

    Right looks like 3ds max and maya don't benefit from FireGL at all, but other cad software does like CATIA, ProE, UG, SW... But I think in future FirePro and Quadro will die with the bad OpenGL support of Windows 7..

    found this chart to be interesting.

    If the X2 4870 can work it would be very fast. But I have read programs like SW dont use SLI/CF. So there for would they also not use X2. Can someone help me out with this.

    http://www.madshrimps.be/vbulletin/attachments/f22/2940d1253710465-amd-radeon-hd-5870-hd-5850

    also..
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-firepro-v8700,2154-7.html

    why is the 8650 outperforming the 8700, 7700 in any test!

    4890? hum I really concerned to pick a card nobody has tested. I remember back modding my HD2900XT, i did not use the exact script and exact driver it took me two weeks to mod. finally I used Shoko's script with a specific driver i think it was 8.453 or something. and it worked.

    So dont want to go through all this again trying to get the right script right driver right card heh.

    Ok but I think if 4870 works the 4890 also works.. I have three ATI cards - HD2700/HD3870/HD4870 and they are all moddable.. I see no reason why it should not work as it is the same architecture only a few mhz higher clock..

    edit:

    In the benchmarks you posted is the V8650 (HD2900XT) as fast as V7700 (HD3870).. If you look at the specs of the cards you will see that they are very similar except V8650 is 512bit memory interface and V7700 only 256bit and V8650 has 2GB vs 512MB on the V7700.. V8700 (HD4870) is a bit faster.. But as the values are very similar I think the benchmark depends also on CPU and not on GPU..

    cools. might be worth a try, how about the X2? No CAD package will use that second core correct?

    Maya may be interesting to test, CATIA may profit from it, maybe I could do some benches on my friends new rig with 2 HD4890 ;)

    interesting set of developments lately. I think Max needs some optimized direct3D drivers, more than anything, and maybe to properly go beyond directX9, as OpenGL for Max is dead for most.

    Funny request: I have an XP 64bit license, but no install media. Does anyone have an OEM version of the install disc that they can turn to .iso and share with me (maybe via rapidshare or similar via PM)??? Thanks in Advance. (currently running XP 32 OEM on one machine, but I need to upgrade it).

    loklo how did the mod work out for your card? every working right? I noticed in 3dsMax I get some ugly looking faces poking through edges sometimes with 8.453 drivers and hd2900xt. Kind of hoping newer drivers newer card might be better.

    I picked up a Sapphire 4870 1GB new of ebay for $165 including shipping, decided to not go with x2 or 2gb version. would have been nice to have 2GB not sure how much performance boost the extra 1GB would have.

    I never did get it working. I gave up until something new came along. Starting to doubt that it's worth it at this point for Max.

    What exact driver are using with XP64?

    Cadcat:
    do you have a link for the 8.633 for XP64? Sorry, I want to replicate exactly what you did. Last time I modded with a driver that was slightly different it did not work dont want to waist 4 days again lol...

    CADCAT on XP x64, are you using Catia V5 32 bits or 64 bits?

    I was trying on Vista 64, not XP. My XP machine is a render node, not a workstation. Not going to switch over my card and everything else...

    So far so good

    So far so good 4870 card mod in XP64 using 6.33 drivers.
    Should we be forcing to FireGLPro 7700 or just FireGL7700?

    1- got device ID PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9440

    2-installed latest riva tuner

    3-installed 6.33 drivers to amd dir

    4-edited CA_85569.inf to look like this, Red letters added

    [ATI.Mfg.NTamd64]
    "ATI FirePro V8700 (FireGL)" = ati2mtag_R7XGL, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9444

    5-edited patch referenced by CADCAT, changed red letters as shown.. (i shorted this for this post just kept the relivant lines)

    # ATI FireGL/FirePRO XP64 mod by gellmaR (gellmaR@yahoo.com)
    # for FireGL drivers version 8.633
    # test only, no ATIFuse enhancements!
    DstVar12 = force AMD FirePro V8700 capabilities
    Dst2_12 = 0F B7 54 24 32 66 25 00 00 66 0D 44 94 66 89 44 24 32 EB 0B 90

    6- ran patch with rivatuner it said patched successful, (some errors shown in log), forced to FireGL7700 PRO, riva created ati2mtag.sys and updated ati2mtag.sy_

    7- did makecab ati2mtag.sys

    8- copied ati2mtag.sy_ to amd dir

    9 -rebooted and pointed device manager to CA_85569.inf, selected 8700 FireGL.
