I'm figuring it may seem like overkill now, but it's probably going to be the norm in the not too distant future. GPUs just get bigger and more power hungry.

Why did you get a triple channel kit for a dual channel board? You do realize that only two sticks of that will be running in dual and the third is just hanging out to dry? Its going to be a nice build other than that, personally getting a triple channel kit for a dual channel board is dumb because you're wasting money on a third stick you don't need.

I'm guessing with that PSU you wan't to be future proof?
imo look into an Enermax PSU That thing is the meaning of future proof.

From reading the manual, it'll take 3 X 2Gb Dimms

are velociraptor drives a good buy still? or is ssd a more worthwhile purchase?

isnt the gene a microATX? why that choice with a full atx case?

it will take it, but it wont be terrible effective. Is the i5 chipset able to do even dual channel with 3 sticks in? (in comparison to 2 or 4), it certainly cant do triple channel. Sry, but I think that was a waste of money, good luck finding a matching single stick for that set up.

I got the velociRaptor because in the 2009 summer buyers guide, it was recommened to stay away from SSD for now. I can always get one later and use my current as extra storage.

Yes, I did get a microATX. I regret it now too. Everything is so close together. The case was bought because I wanted to have room to grow. H2O may be in my future. Also, I like to know there's good air flow around all my gear.

I take all this as a learning experiance. This is my first build. I did all the research on my own. So yes, I made some mistakes. I'm learning from them.
