Im in bios and wondering which is the best to use for my sata 2 hdd. Theres legacy IDE/ native IDE/ SATA AHCI and raid. Not sure which is the best. Im not runnign a raid array so thats out of the question. I dont really use features of ahci (hotswapping/staggered boots etc). Wondering between ahci/native ide/legacy ide there are any speed differences. Cheers
ACHI is your best option as it enables SATA drive special features and also helps on how it places data on the disk to where the seek time is less. I learned about about this the other day. Might want to do some Googling to understand it more.
^ Agreed and yes there is a small speed difference. If Windows 7(see link) was installed already you need to edit the registry to change to AHCI or you'll get the BSOD. Don't know if you have to do this with any other OS. http://www.ithinkdiff.com/how-to-enable-ahci-in-windows-7-rc-after-installation/
Exactly! After I realized I did not do it before installation, I had to go into the registry and everything is great! Google is a beautiful thing!!
so before installing my new os on my new build. i can enable this option in bios and be set correct? and there is a slight speed difference in load times or?
There's even a small downgrade in speed, specially continuos read/write, in exchange better burst read, i did it for knowledge sake, but unpacking from rar files for example it's noticeably slower.
hmm dont really want that slowodwn....do the increases show in maybe a second or two shaved off my boottime or maybe a bit of faster loading times?
Never got a speed down on AHCI. With NCQ it actually sped up a bit, not by a lot, and it helps the card last longer as the drive head doesn't need to travel that far to go from point A to B. deltatux
kk i enabled ahci and disabled IDE controller in bios...how come theres still standard IDE controller in device manager...? Cheers
is there anyway i can disable standard IDE controller in bios or something? ide controller is also disabled in bios so why isnt it disabled in windows?
if you're seeing that in your device manager, it's because your motherboard has IDE channels? All modern boards still do even if they're not used. For me, I use the IDE channel for my DVD drives. All DVD drives in my house (incl. new machines) still use IDE. deltatux
