    hi everybody.
I tried to softmod may hd 4870 x2 to firepro 8700 with rivatuner, but it can't patch the ati firepro driver. Here there are the patch file and the error message:

I didn't look at the patchscript, I dunno if it's a new one
if it's not, it can't work on your card: there's no mod yet for HD4000 generation cards

Ok man, here's the deal - I have managed to patch the drivers, my computer detects gfx card as a FirePro v8700 (I have 4870x2), after some time of fight with RivaTuner. I used script used by Gellar for Xp64bit (I am using Vista64bit) with FirePro_8.583_XP64_77158 driver. After some crashes due to gfx modyfication I launched safe mode and patched the same driver to the second card - which in fact was yet recognised as v8700 but after that I could run my PC without crashes.

And here's also my questyion - when I launch CCC it detects FirePro v8700 but can't check all it's status, I mean no speed and so on, CCC is limited to some information tab and display tab, that doesn't do much :/ Did anyone reach my stage here? I used specviewperf to check 3ds perf, but I get Weighted Geometric Mean = 18.53. I understand that this is not the perf I was looking for;)

And another thing - I don't have CCC in my right corner of the taskbar, which do implicates that when I run specviewperf the calculations were performed by CPU? I have q9550 now OC to 3,4Ghz (wen't down after I decided to change drivers so I couldn,t control fan speed on my GFX card:).

    So - frankenstein mod?

I have managed to launch CCC after changing a little patchscript, altough the error still occured, everything looks perfect, just the big ATI logo in left down corner shows only ATI Radeon Graohics, not Ati FirePro, but the syst recognises v8700 :/ FK! :bang: I don't know, run SpecViewperf and got smaller numbers, I guess... :crapper:

Is there anyone who can now run his 4870x2 with rivatuner as v8700?!!?!? ANYONE?!

    Scotty, http://www.speedyshare.com/705131961.html - here,s the link :)

And what's curious - I have managed to fire it up on Vista 64 Service packed, with effects i mentioned before (and no perf increase). After modyfying Gellars script and some other - altough I am not a programmer I - I've managed to do it, you will get an error message, but after that system will eventually catch the v8700:) The driver for Vista is the newest one. Maybe someone who knows how to kick the **** out of AMD's security locks (ex Gellar or maybe You:) will do finally achieve success:D

Drivers used for Vista : FirePro_8.583_Vista64_77160

Just in case I am putting the patchscript in here:

Forgot to add: in RivaTuner (while using Vista64) You have to modyfy the atikmdag.sy_ file, just to be precise:)

will this patched driver work for a regular gigabyte 4870 (not x2)? I'm on vista64 - if you could send me the driver, or something, that would be great. (I guess HD4870=v8750)
I don't know what I'm doing with patchscripting yet.

Because it's the power of rendering that people are seeking for. When it comes to rendering, FireGL or FirePro cards are much more superior than the radeon cards. If you can get a 3870 or 4870 to mod into a FireGL/FirePro, the performance boost you get in it will possibly be even faster than say a 6870 or even a 7870.

^ you forgot to mention "FOR RENDERING 3D OBJECTS" and already, you've got someone cornfuzed enough thinking he's going to have a free 6870 by simply flashing a BIOS.

The "Fire" branded cards are for 3D rendering while using 3D modeling programs like CAD software, Maya, etc. - NOT games. (gotta watch how you say things so that people aren't instantly mislead).

Don't bother. Unless you do a lot of encoding/3D modeling, you're going to actually be gaining absolutely nothing.

Fire branded cards are specifically made for 3D rendering of objects, not gaming.

Yup, but "real" Fire series, not some crappy Radeon with drivers changed. It's basically other conception - while Radeon tries to render as fast as possible, FireGL/FirePro are designed to do as much as possible at the same time in the most accurate way (they're able to render real-time as much as 8 viewports, which is usually enough). You can't overcome difficulties which just simple patch, all in all it'll give you just some new functions in drivers (like 10-bit color and some), and in SolidWorks (which in fact is so stupid it'd take your Radeon as Fire when you change card name in .inf;)) To prove my theory that it's not possible to get free Fire card from cheap Radeon's I can tell you about my discoveries - Softimage is about 20% slower on modded drivers, Pro/ENGINEER has massive glitches with shaded viewport, same goes to Unigraphics, which is also slower by about 30%:3eyes: Also - Maya 2009 and 2010 is just the same when it goes to fps in viewport, but it has massive lags with surface paint and hair tools, and also AutoCAD Mechanical - actually it's a bit faster in viewport, but has lags and glitches as well. Meh, I really need professional card (working on CAD software more than often), but I guess it won't be done, especially for laptop's. I'm gonna save for shiny Dell Precision or some HP with real Quadro.

YOU'RE GETTING MANY THINGS WRONG HERE

    firegl/quadro doesn't improve rendering

what they do is that they accelerate viewports in professional 3D applicatios, such as Maya, 3dsmax, etc

(yes, they can also help some renderers in those programs, but that's the hardware renderers that hardly anybody uses because they give you pretty bad quality renders)

I haven't looked at gelato for a looong time, but my latest impression was that it wasn't still ready for real world use

And what's "viewport" if not rendering? So far as I know rendering is doing 3D-like view from data, and both viewport and visualisation (a.k.a. just render) are that, only difference is method - viewport is mostly shaded, while hq viz is ray-traced. Ray-tracing is not yet hardware supported by current GPUs so it's not accelerated... yet.

Here's short description of both, so, Mr. Know-It-All, you can educate to not write nonsense again;)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_rendering
Hint - viewport is under real time rendering, while this, what you call rendering is just non real time rendering "chapter". Peace.

I call rendering to what happens just after you click the "render" button

the viewports are also rendered (usually using the GPU), but the other thing would be the output render (usually using only the CPU, although the latest MentalRay comes with something called iRay which uses CUDA; I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know if it's good enough for a final render, or still only good for previews)

EDIT: by the way, anybody interested in assessing real world viewport performance in Maya, for example to see how much better a FireGL/Quadro is than a Radeon/GeForce in this task, please go to the MayaCarBench thread:
