Its a dual gpu and it barely holds it:bang: lol + the fact it doesnt support dx11 and uses allot of power..:stewpid:

umm no apps support DX11 and ATI's own 4870X2 outperforms the 5870 in many cases at high res and it uses more power than any card.

It's a dual GPU of a year old design. What do you expect? That when the 5870 comes out Nvidia will issue a driver update that turns it into a 1 GPU, DX11 supporting green beast? I mean seriously?

I'm just ready to see this GPGPU with GDDR5 + 512bit BUS from NVIDIA

I hope those are the specs. I mean the 5870 doesn't seem to be too memory bandwidth strapped in any games, but it will definitely be a major upgrade over the GDDR3 in the GTX2xx - it should actually lower the production price too.

so what if there aren't any apps its more future proof than any current gpu. And why did you mentioned power usage of a dual gpu again, this is a single gpu.

I don't know, maybe because he said 9x throughout the thread he is looking at it from the perspective of the card that produces the highest framerate? Some people don't really care about how much power their card takes up, or if it's dual or single GPU.

I mean you're seriously making it sound like ATi has accomplished this huge feat by taking a single GPU and making it match a previous versions dual GPU counterpart. It's happened three times in the past already, it's pretty common.

That's because ATI were actually making the chip specifically to compete against that card.

The difference is, Nvidia make dual GPU solutions to dominate the high end segment. ATI make dual GPU solutions because it's cheaper and easier to compete against Nvidia's top single GPU card, thats the only reason why it's compared that way

If ATI did things the way Nvidia do with regards to that, then you could compare them directly, but the simple truth is, the X2 cards are targeted at the GTX x80 cards so wait.. that makes it logical to compare them against their direct competitor right? Atleast it does if you're not a fanboy anyway ;)

I can't see why anyone with GTX 295 would be looking into getting the HD 5870. GT300 on the other hand, if it lives upto its promises, looks like a proper upgrade. Or the HD 5870 X2. But I do prefer single GPU in high-end so GT300 for me.

Page 24 in Hilberts 5870 review and take a close look at the 3DM Vantage GPU score people, compared with the 285GTX the 5870 is the fastest single GPU card on the planet for a very good price. The GT300 is probably going to be a bit faster then the 5870 but for a less attractive price.
And please dont compare a 8 cylinder engine with a V12. Even if you do the 295GTX is a complete joke becouse a single GPU card is getting so close performance wise. Nvidia better get it right this time becouse

Im waiting to see what the 5870 x2 is gonna be like, i think its gonna be very expensive, but blazing fast.
The 5870 dont seem to overclock very much either and the 295 overclocks like a beast.

2 early to tell re the 5870 and its overclockability. plus re the 295 you can overclock them very nicely but the problem then is heat and noise..

i for one dont like playing with a toaster that sounds like my sisters hair dyrer on a bad day :)

The GTX285 is over £100 cheaper than the 5870 in the UK, and two 285's in SLI is still the fastest thing i've ever saw, and for less than £400, and no doubt cheaper soon.

Strange thing about all the reviews i read, it put me off the 5870, and made me start pricing 285's.

Lol, the 2 4870 i had in crossfire heated my whole room up in the winter and under load they sounded like a jet taking off.
The 295 is a lot cooler and quieter.

Have you never heard your GTX295 at 60+% fan speed then?

The GTX295 has the loudest cooler according to some reviews.

I have said it before but my personal feeling is that the dual GPU cards are just too gymicky, aren't supported well enough, come with inharrent risk and ultimately are only good for two situations: 1) If you need the performance but lack a supported motherboard and 2) If you want to go quad SLI. - if you're needs don't fall into one of those two categories then you'd be making a mistake in getting one of these types of cards.

Basically, I stay as far away from these gymicky cards as possible.

I personally find the noise of HD 4870x2 a bit more annoying than 295.
