which is the best driver to use with vista 64 - I use mostly Max 2009 32b since two of my render nodes are 32bit OS still. And which is the best set of instructions to follow for all of this driver modding?
    nice model though :)

and to revert, I just install regular catalyst or 4870 driver?

As far as know yes. This is a soft mod not a bios mod. The mod doesn't affect the card's bios or hardware. :)

unless I'm doing something wrong, and missed something somewhere, Wesley's driver doesn't work at all for me.
    -reverted to 9.7 for 4870
-changed driver via device manager to new one
-(GPUz calls it a FirePro 8700, but with lesser pixel and texel fill rate)
    -resolution dropped
    -CCC doesn't work
-windows doesn't fully recognize the driver as anything (unknown when I click advanced in Display Settings)
-3DS Max Design 2009 32bit failed to initilize D3D device.
    -reverted back to 9.8
-now the bike scene gives me ~130-140 FPS... things that make you go hmmmm
-even uninstalled the FirePro driver and all related files via device manager.
-I feel like a reboot slut. can't wait until MS changes that "feature" of windows.

    Ideas?

    Have you change the deviceid?

I didn't think that was a necessary step, using the driver that wesley rolled. I tried the newer signed version, and it's still not working...
Is Gelmar close with something new?

can you give me a step by step of what you did, and which drivers (post#) you used?

edit - is there a way to force re-install catalyst... it seems they've made it so impossible to manually install anything related to CCC without going through the Install Manager. I've tried manually going through all the CCC components in the ATI folder, but I keep getting "Catalyst Control Center: Monitoring program has stopped working" errors no matter what I try after reverting from 9.8 to 9.7

The catalist dosn't work in my case,
    I've used the first driver
    X86
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=468NOELE
    X64
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GY4C5X88

Now you must search the deviceid of your graficboard--->rivaturner-Customize->Graphics subsystem diagnostic report

    Codice:

    $ffffffffff ----------------------------------------------------------------
    $ffffffffff Northbridge information
    $ffffffffff ----------------------------------------------------------------
    $0400000000 Description : unknown
    $0400000001 Vendor ID : 8086 (Intel)
    $0400000002 Device ID : 29a0
$0400000003 AGP bus : not supported
    $ffffffffff ----------------------------------------------------------------
    $ffffffffff Display adapter information
    $ffffffffff ----------------------------------------------------------------
    $0000000000 Description : Radeon X1800 Series
    $0000000001 Vendor ID : 1002 (ATI)
    $0000000002 Device ID : 7109

Now open the inf file in the driver folder with notepad and change the device Id in the sting of firegl ex. 4870----->firegl

    Sorry for my english

    It's all right :(

have you following the first part of the tutorial?
1.Use Run as Administrator to open Command Prompt, type: Bcdedit.exe –set TESTSIGNING ON,restart computer.
2.double click ATI.mod.cer,install certificate to“trusted root certification authorities“
3.install driver which use inf method.

Sorry but i'm not a guru.....:_(

Radeon HD 2600 Pro, Radeon HD 3850/3870, Radeon HD 4870 are moddable

Can anyone tell me which of the ATI HD 3450, 4350, 4550, 4670, 4730, 4850, 4870 or 4890 series are moddable and which others are not

    I currently have a 3870
SAPPHIRE HD4550 HDMI and SAPPHIRE HD4670 are cheap
4870 and 4890 are too pricy, 4870 is around %20 and 4890 is around %50 more than 4850, will I have any gain in 3ds max or Rhino with those
I consider buying Sapphire, SAPPHIRE has VAPOR-X series, what is the difference

install latest maximum drivers (download from ati) and expand atiom9gl_64.dr_ file, then place it in 3dsmax9 dir.
or i can send you that expanded file via email

I'm also with casebuyer - I've got an HD 3450 in another box - is it moddable?

Sorry I'm getting confused here. Is there a patch script for 48XX series? Does it use both cores of the X2?

also does 3dsMax 2010 use OpenGL, I see only directX in the driver list it uses?

Thanks Gelmar and those that are working on this!

does anyone have a firegl v3600, either real or soft, which can give me some real world 3ds max performance numbers?

Ioklo actually if you try modding it and share us it would be cool
    3x50 3x70 4x50 4x70 has a chance to be modded, as xx50 xx70 approach
or 38xx 48xx approach, it may be not

    everyone preferred 2x00 and 38x0 48x0
noone bought any other card so noone modded yet as far as I read

If you try to mod and can restart it is sure moddable
If you can't you can always clean with driver sweeper and reinstall old driver

Max has switched to D3D a long time ago and using a OpenGL is not recommended by Autodesk (IIRC). I tried my real (no softmod) quadro FX1700 in 3ds max with OpenGL and D3D. D3D is many times faster.

Latest ATI Maximum driver (OpenGL based) for Max was for version 9 and it has been discontinued. Looks like Nvidia has also discontinued the maxtreme driver (which is based on D3D but just better optimized than regular max driver). There is no maxtreme driver for Max 2010 and it looks like there never will be so I am sticking with version 2008 (or 2009).

I don't believe you will see any performance difference (not any significant) with a softmodded or a real FireGL card compared to its gameing card counterpart inside 3ds max with D3D. So in my opinion softmodding to FireGL for 3ds max is pointless unless of course you are using Max 9 with Maximum driver which btw I can't rly comment as I have no experience there.

I would love to see a benchmark of the bike scene in Max 9 with Maximum driver and a softmodded 3870-4870 (looks like I will have to do this myself as no one is willing to).
