The 'hotfix' seems to download the whole driver installer +150MB.

Can I install this on top of my current 9.7 drivers..will I get the hotfix benefits, or should I install the vanilla 9.8 then overlay this on top of it..???

I am pretty sure my 2 4850's hit the 99% load mark pretty often :) , i can post screen shots to prove it. Is this limitations only on the 4870X2, 4870 and 4890 cards?

It boggles my mind the widespread paranoia about updating drivers......

You can always install over the top when updating your drivers if you like. ATI's install manager will take care of everything for you and verify all has installed as it should.

You will keep your settings too.

Considering all the driver installation disasters I've been through (with both ATI and Nvidia), I don't think the paranoia is unfounded. They really are out to get ya! :p

The only time I've ever had issues is when using Driversweeper.

Not in XP. The files are in use. Vista is able to switch to standard VGA, and thus, stop using the files the installer needs to write to. XP has no such functionality, so it's always better to uninstall and reboot first. I usually use Driver Sweeper as well (after initial reboot, and then again after rebooting to safe mode, just to be ... safe) because I like keeping a clean system, and it helps to reduce zombie files (at least psychologically).

Not only that, but ATI and nvidia both recommend uninstalling first:

Never had any problems with Driver Sweeper.

I've started doing that in Vista/Win 7. XP I always ran driver cleaner, for obvious reasons.

@kitch9, you're like a cat and a bowl of milk... you can't resist commenting on whether people need to install ATI drivers the "long" way or not. Is this some kind of serious trauma or something? ;)
Here's an example of when doing it the "long" way....was the ONLY way to get it to work. Sometimes, there's no choice.

I just noticed that the hotfix is form August the 14th.

So why did ATI release the bugged driver, instead of releasing the hotfixed one?

Had a terrible time with the hotfix and LOTRO.

But it turned out to be because I had set a windows startup setting that was causing the application to starve for memory. OOPS.

Turned that back to default... reloaded 9.8 hotfix (I had reloaded 9.8) and things are working just fine.

Never mind. Nothing to see here. Move along.

For ati you have to fully uninstall. You don't have to do safe mode if uninstall reboot cleaned it off. Installing over existing drivers makes 4890 shutter, run like a 286, freeze, bsod, contribute to 100% bad stuff people say about catalyst drivers, etc. Tested many times.

Drive sweeper is only required if you're having graphical issues/difficulties. Otherwise, just uninstall the driver, and install the new one. You can also install over the old one, but that is messy and not the optimal method.

Ati recommend uninstalling Legacy drivers, which is correct as they aren't designed around the install manager. I should have said about the XP limitation, but I always forget that even exists now.

I got GPU install errors with driver sweeper, with ATI so I don't use it at all now as only a OS re-install seemed to fix it.

    Stupid question:

may i do a clean installation with ATI_Catalyst_9.8_Hotfix_Win7_Vista_Aug14.exe only, then should i install 9-8_vista_win7_32-64_xcode.exe for finish. right? Thanks!!
