I'd say gtx275, if you can afford it. It will give you better performance.

    well i was thinkin either a Asus GTX 260 TOP 55nm, 2300MHz GDDR3, GPU 650 MHz, Shader 1400 MHz, 216 Cores
or just a stock 275 which will be about £20 dearer do you think the stock 275 will be better than a overclocked 260 then and thanks for the reply

I see a lot of benchmarks recently and the 275GTX stays ahead of 260GTX (with 216p) about 5~10 fps @ 1280x1024 (few pixels more to renderize than 1440x900).

But you can overclock the 260GTX, and the difference will decrease or even disappear.

.....But, of course, you can also overclock the 275GTX ... :p

Buy the 275GTX if it costs no more than $20 than the 265GTX.

I'm happy with my Patriot Viper II kit (3x2 GB DDR3; 1600Mhz CAS 24x9x9x9 - but it can run # 1600Mhz with CL 24x8x8x8 and 1.64v).

Dude, you dont need a 275 for 1440x900, seriously. But, thats not my decision. My gtx 260 played crysis everything high, filters at x2 and I got ~27fps avg.

Its up to you, but either the 260 or 275 will run circles over your 8800. Crysis was playable on my 8800gts before at 1280x800, but now I can run it using even higher settings @ 1680x1050. Plus, Crysis isn't the only game out there. Everything else I played was just so much more smoother

clock for clock the 260 is the same pretty much as the 275 minus 24 shaders. I have my 260 vanilla overclocked to 666/1404/2304 stock is 576/1242/1998. I recommend the 260 if its much lower cost wise

i have found a Asus GeForce GTX 260 TOP
    Core Clock: 650MHz
    - Memory Clock: 2300MHz (Effective)
    - Shader Clock: 1400MHz
for £128 will this run faster than a stock 275 ?

I´d say no way... but pretty close (talking about stock GTX 275)

If you find a GTX 260 216sp so much cheaper than a GTX 275 then pick it up, but if it´s not much cheaper then choose the second one.

PD: For that resolution you´ll never be dissapointed with the GTX 260, trust me.

Well, I believe the new cards will be coming out next year. ATI on the other hand will be the 1st one to give us a taste of dx11 cards, sometime late this year.

Wait and buy both gpu and monitor together. Price will decrease on both due to technology and you'll notice a larger improvement. If you get a new gpu now at the rez you play, you won't see much improvement. However, when you get your new monitor, you'll notice a decrease due to the increased rez. buying both together eliminates this perception (real to you).

And September isn't that far away.

I think you'll need a new generation card (G300 or alikes) to play 2009~2010 games without any problems @ 1080p. Or two cards in SLI.

So you can wait a little bit - 6 to 9 months to buy a new card and a new monitor. nVidia and ATI will release new vga's in september-november, DX11 already for Windows 7.

I'd say wait till the release of GT300. If you at all want a card now I'd say got GTX 275 if the cost difference is low. Else it is not much of a difference if you get GTX 260. And if you going for GTX 260 go for 216sp models.
