I went from an E8400 to a Q9550 and got a fair boost.

I have them both clocked the same @ 3.6ghz only the quad needs a bit more volts to do it.

I'd have got the Q9650 too if I hadn't got such a good deal on the Q9550. I could have just run a 400 fsb then... oh well.

Seeing as it's clocked the same as my E8400 was, I get at least the same performance but with the added benefit of the extra cores for apps that can use them. Things just feel snappier with the quad too... I'd say go for it if you want one!

    same here.

    i jumped from E8400 OC'ed at 4.0GHZ to Q9550 STOCK

and it's awsome for sure u will see increase in windows performance and gaming .( but u might wann OC a little bit for gaming)

    so i say go for Q9550 .

I would stay with 8400. Just run it 9x500 or 8x500 depends how far your can go. Mike

i say go for it if its not gonna cost you too much, i went from E6400@3.55Ghz to Q9550@4Ghz( E1 stepping version was great as it didnt need much vcore to get 4Ghz ).

tbh there are very few games that require a quad, GTA IV and Supreme Commander being the only 2 i can think of that really really need it.

You will not be disappointed, just gone from E8400 to a Q9650 myself.

I vote for going to Q9550 instead. However, just the fact that the prices for the higher end Q9xxx series are very high, I just won't even bother with them.

wow E8400 at 5GHz is that watercooled? to the OP u'd probs see a nice boost but wait for the i5 to come out, the prices of the Q9xxx might drop, or you may even decide to go i5 or i7

I see more value by going i7 920 than the Core 2 Quad Q9650.

going i7 is better, but the you need a new m/b, ram, and cpu.
popping in a q9650 you just need to buy the cpu, then you can sell you c2d dual core

I agree only problem is he'd need new chipset, and X58 is not the cheapest lol, especially if he's like me and would be considering the Asus Rampage II

lol, true, but the performance gain would be a huge magnitude compared to upgrading from a Core 2 to another Core 2.

I am gonna look for a quad when the i5 comes out, then the prices will fall even a little bit.

That way i can still save for the next build.....new architecture from intel....maybe 6 cores!???

But honestly....wait....at the end....the benefit will be yours...

6 cores would be pointless...considering we're still not seeing a lot of apps utilizing quad core processors...6 core just means you'll have 4 cores doing nearly nothing instead of only 2...

    4 Ghz at 450 FSB
3.6 Ghz 400 FSB (too low for the $$)
3.8 Ghz 425 FSB (prob the easy one to get)
