Even though I am an ATI fanboy, I will suggest the 260 ... the 512 version of the 4850 doesn't seem like it would be worth it.

    He's asking about the 4870, not 4850

They're very similar. If you have an Intel based board get the ATI card, if you have an nVidia based board get the nVidia card. ATI drivers for the 4870 are fine.

I can't even get ATI Drivers (9.1) to work on a fresh Vista Business x64 install (BSOD after restart). IMO I would stay away from ATI due to drivers and go with NVIDIA (GTX 260 C216).

That sounds like a personal problem, LedHead xP
Cat 9.1 working like a charm here.

oops, that is a typo. I still suggest a 260 over a 4870. I would only get the 1gb 4870 if I were going to buy one.

personally, I must say, what is the point in getting a factory overclocked gtx 260. Just buy the standard gtx 260 c 216 save yourself like 30 bucks and call it a day. You can download the evga precision device and overclock it yourself. Its the exsact same card, your just paying another 30 bucks for a crappy overclock. I know its not the same as comparing a 260 sc to a 4870, but you could save yourself money and overclock it way more than that. Sure you could buy the superclocked version and overclock that, whats the point? just save youself the 30 dollers or whatever it is! Definatly get the gtx 260 over the 4870 though =D

Because you can OC the SSC higher than the vanilla model. BTW it's not quite the exact same card. They bin the memory and GPU's for speed. The OC versions get the faster memory and GPU's

Good news! You can't go wrong with either. I'd get the card that does best on the games you play : )

Guys I ordered the ATI 4870 1 GB for $219 ( $194 after MIR) it seemed like real a good deal to me. It has a return policy on it, if I have any problems related to drivers or any other sort I'll return it and get a 260.
The price over performance played an important role in my decision. But lets see.

Wow, really? You sure about that? Absolutely positive? 100% certain with a cherry on top?

Looks to me like the two cards are evenly matched. Unless of course you plan to only play the games the GTX260 wins by an petty 10% ;)

Look its not about fanboizm my prev card was ati 9800 xt, and if u have the same score for equal cards today, in 6 month when u shall get some new games u didnt test on them, nvidia perform a way better cause of drivers support.
just think about doom 3, farcry and (last one) gta4 stories.. Ati card was a failures there..

Your starting that it's not about fanboyism and yet your making an assumption that the GTX260 will pull ahead in the future based off how you feel about Nvidia's drivers? :)

No, i base it on deep experience about how ATI card perform in past.
After the Ge 5900 ultra vs 9800xt generation fights, while ati performed NOT worster than geforce (allthough it lost in doom3), nvidia cards took any other equal ati card in next 5 generations. (6,7,8,9 and x)

Then it's a good thing then that this thread isn't about your past experience ;)

Well, u can be ironic about that, but if u refuse, that 9800xt was the LAST vcard that gave a real fight to nvidia equal cards, and after nvidia took the lead, then u dont know about gaming/vcard much :)

    SS or never happend.

Equal 9800 vs 5900 and ati lose it hard:
    http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDc0LDIsLGhjb25zb2xl

    thats what i ment

    6800 seems equal to x800
    http://www.behardware.com/articles/596-5/survey-of-mid-range-video-cards.html

and in a game comes like 5 month after:

    http://www.xbitlabs.com/images/video/geforce-6800gs/sam2_candy.gif

Every time ATI make an equal card, it lose to nvidia after a 3-6 month.
