    Hi guys,

Yesterday I just bought a Galaxy GeForce GTX 260+ 896mb 216 Core Processors Edition, which means my current computer specs on Guru3D aren't good enough. I'm buying a whole new computer and I want an AMD CPU.

My friends have suggested the AMD Phenom X3 8750 Triple-Core BLACK EDITION, but one of my friends says the Black Edition isn't worth the extra cost and that most of the stress during gaming will be on the graphics card. I've already bought a motherboard, a ASUS nForce 750a SLI, and I know it supports the AM2+ socket the Phenom Triple-Cores need.

I'm open to all suggestions, and whilst I'm at it, I've picked - but haven't yet bought - a Silverstone 700Watt PSU, with a single 12volt rail with 58amps on it: will this be enough to run the 260+? (I'm not educated in the finer points of PSU's and don't understand forum members when they talk about it.)

    Cheers!

    I can't afford the i7. I just don't want the CPU to be too much of a bottleneck - I'm not running Prime95 24-7.

If you really want AMD CPU, buy Phenom II 940 Black Edition (or 920) if you want to see any improvements over your current CPU. In my opinion "upgrading" to Phenom X3 8750 wouldn't be wise thing to do.

Do you think the Black Edition is worth the extra cost though?

    EDIT:

Whoah! That's NZ$550 for the AMD Phenom II X4 940. Don't you think that's a bit much? I can't afford something like that, so I've got to settle for something that won't be too much of a bottleneck.

At least here in Finland it is since the price difference is really small.

Lol, I just checked on PriceSpy.co.nz and you can only get the Black Edition.

Yeah, there's only 940 BE and the price difference between it and 920 is rather small.

well i think im getting the 7750BE with a 790FX mobo for overclockage, might be worth thinking of if youre planning to OC it. im also getting that same PSU you bought so would like an answer on your 260 question too :p

PS the 7750BE is dirt cheap

fter readin Guru3D's reviews on he X3 and the X2, I think I'm gonna get the AMD Athlon X2 7750 Dual Core 2.7GHz AM2+ Black Edition as well. And yeah: it is "dirt cheap" (and not too bad either).

How much of an improvement is the AMD Athlon X2 7750BE OR a X3 8750BE over the E2180?

From my experience, AMD chipsets and Nvidia GPU's are a little buggy when paired, but again, that is just my experience. I may be doing something wrong!

    @CCchips
Just get this CPU, it will be a major improvement from what you have now and you can continue to use the same Mobo!
I believe however, you will need a new Mobo and mem if you want to reach DDR2 800/1066. This can be done for $100 or less!
    Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB-L2 LGA 775 65W @ $164
    Model #: BX80570E8400

$280 should upgrade you very well in the mid range mobo and mem market with listed CPU!

the 7750 would serve you well. Many ppl won't even go tri-core b/c it's just weird... and not that much more performance...

No one knows what AMD was thinking making a tri-core.

For sure, dish out for the Phenom 940- you will not regret it.

i'm going to go ahead and say you're good to go with the 7750, and if you can, overclock that sucker! :) it's a good overclocking CPU

As to pdxmark, he has an nvidia chipset pair with an nvidia GPU, 750a chipset is nvidia

Only thing i would suggest other then the 7750, would be the 920, if you can find it for relatively cheaper then the 940, also, black edition CPU's don't cost more (at least here in the US), for instance, the 920 is 2.8Ghz here for $235, while the 940 is 3.0Ghz, is a black edition (unlocked multipliers), and is $275

The simple fact that it's 200Mhz faster would explain for the difference in price, so having it a black edition makes it that much better

Sames goes to say with the 9850 Black edition, it is clocked at 2.5Ghz, and costs 144.99, while the 9750 is clocked at 2.4Ghz, is not a black edition, and costs 5 dollars more at 149.99 lol, the 9950 however costs 169.99 @ 2.6Ghz and is a black edition

Not sure how it is where you live though :)

Thanks pdxmark and dougk for the recommendations. I heard that AMD CPUs work strange when they aren't using their native RAM MHz, and I certainly don't want to stick with my current (and incredibly crummy) 667MHz RAM.

If it's between a Tri-Core and Dual-Core tat's faster per CPU, I'll definitely go Dual-Core. There's a review on Guru3D that compares multiple CPUs and they found that the onyl thing that matters for today's games is the single CPU, with the other CPUs not even being utilised beyond 20%, although it does say that tomorrow's games might take advantage of the increasingly popular Quad-Cores.

Fo me, I just don't see games in the forseeable future being CPU-hogs, being more GPU-hogs today. I'll seeif I can afford the 8400, but if it isn't substantially cheaper in Hong Kong (where I'm holidaying right now), I'll just get the cheap 7750 BE.

Sorry NvidiaRox, I can't afford the Phenom II 940 - I really wish I could.

Thanks Aura, that explains the BE.

I like my 7750, i think it's a good choice. I would've suggested the triple core if you had a SB750 though. The 7750 seems to overclock good regardless. :D

What kind of cooling would I need to get to overclock it to 3GHz? I can't buy additional cooling in New Zealand, so I'm gonna have to get it here in Hong Kong.

This is what i use: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233005

It's a little noise at full plast, but it is a PWM fan, so it's not like it's running full blast all the time. It's quiet at idle, surfing, recording mp3's, etc...

In fact i don't reach 55C very often to even get it to run full blast. Stess testing is the only thing that has gotten it there and on a hot day. :D

My mobo doesn't ramp up the fan speed when set to auto either it just abruptly changes speeds. :p
