In a bit of a dilemma atm. Planning on OC'n either one to atleast 4ghz on air; atm only have enough money to buy CPU/Board/Memory and will have to stick with my existing 2x8800 GTS 640mb's in sli.

    So...

    1. Best board to OC with for 9550 that can hit 4ghz Easily under ~$320 thats SLI Compatible.
    2. Best board to OC with for 920 that can hit 4ghz Easily under ~$320

    Thanks

You could get the evga 750i or xfx/evga 780i. Might take a bit of work to hit 4GHz though.

My board can do it, but it's pretty much pushing its limit. No guarantee all of them can.

95% of the time Intel boards are 100% rock solid:))). I'd go with the new chips for future proofing unless you need that extra cash for something else.

I thought quads had a hard time hitting the 4GHz barrier. Don't the i7 920's have a hard time hitting 4GHz too if you have a high vid? Something about the voltage sensor shuts down the cpu. (I believe)

the i7 will get twice the performance about, im not sure what motherboard to get, but definitly get the i7. and even if you get it to only 3.5Ghz, thats still great.

Ya i looked into some reviews on the evga 780i and one really complained how bad it was stability wise... so I'm not sure about that; I believe the same source commented the 750i version was solid however.

I'm thinking going the x58 i7 route it's just that it's a 'lot' of money. It would be helpeful to see some benchmarks comparing the 2 q9550 vs 720) at the same OC speeds of around 3.8-4.0ghz to get a good idea of the difference. I would imagine the 920 would still beat it out having the HT'ing on-top of the 4 core's along with the DDR3... hmm

I went from QX9650 to my new rig and the speed difference is huge. i made the decision to sell my last rig while its still worth something compared to the new tech...... and I have absolutely no regrets.

Can you go a little more in detail about how much of an improvement you've seen? Sorry for being nosy. It's just that in Feb. I'll have the chance to do a major overhaul but I'm not willing for a minor bump in speed. I may just get a quad and a new vid card and be done with it, or like you an i7 overhaul.
