We have numerous servers at a datacenter on a 30MBit+ network in Vegas. When we run SpeedTest.net tests to other servers (like LA or Phoenix) we get up and down speeds ~30,000. The problem is when our people try to download via SVN or FTP from any of our servers, their speeds are ~300kb/s to 1.5MB/s. Our systems run Server 2003 (and one has Server 2008). We cannot figure out why the net speeds are so bad. Transfer speeds between the machines is perfectly fine (LAN). Any ideas what is going on here?
when you say "your people" do you mean people downloading from your server at their homes? or on the business intranet? it sounds like a thread speed limit set in the software application (FTP) that isn't allowing the client to download at full speed.
Actually we see the same thing with Subversion and FTP. Speeds bounce between 300K - 1,400k bytes per sec, so we're getting bursts up to roughly 10MBit, but the question is how come we aren't getting bursts up to 30 Mbit?
When you say you have them at a DataCenter, do you mean you manage them and install the software and they host them, or are they hosting and providing the software with SVN and FTP etc? If they are doing it, they could very well limit the speed of those particular services.
We control and host everything ourselves, which is why this is so strange. I can do a speedtest to a hub in LA and get 50MBit, but our Subversion and FTP refuses to go any faster than 8Mbit...
