My wife has a couple of 1TB WD Mybook Essential External hard drives connected to her Laptop. Whenever they're not in use for a while (10 minutes or so) and she wants to browse the hard drive it seems to spin up before it opens any of the root folders. this take a couple of seconds, but can get quite annoying. Is there anyway to bypass this and keep them ready for use (so to speak)..? I hope everyone can understand what I'm on about Thanx
I don't believe so no. They will power down if not in use to save power, which i guess is a built in feature. Also, the less they're active, the longer they will last (in theory) But i've never heard of a way to stop a drive from going into sleep mode.
No problem bud. Its probably because external drives aren't meant for continuous use, where by you don't run an OS off one for example. Internal drives don't power down so its just probably a feature of external drives. I say probably, because thruthfully, i've never owned one.
Actually, it might be windows controlling this. Go to the control panel - power saving (whatever it is called) and try to increase the time for "Turn off hard disks". See if that makes a difference.
That's not in the power management options, not in Vista 64 anyway. I have the same problem, my main hard drive with 97% of my permanent files is not my HDD with the OS on it so it often powers down and then has to spin up again. It's horribly annoying.
