I will wait for the 55nm atleast couse my 8800GT 512Mb is pretty okay for now but I definetly want a better card for Stalker Clear Sky. man this game looks insane and be sure of that you will need a powerfull card to game in it's Dx10 Glory :D

I was thinking about the 4870X2 but after some thinking I say no way it gonna be more problem with this CF crap as it's two GPU's, if I want multi GPU's its gonna be the nVidia way SLI. almost every game out there is TWIMP as everywon knows.

nVidia pretty much own the market and have the devs in their pocket so how it is you get less problem with them and they KNOWS how to do drivers and the 280GTX is a helluve card thats for sure :D

you will have problems with both sli and crossfire... tho from previews it seems that 4870x2 is working nicely almost everything except crysis since xfire has problems with it, even sli had at start. but scaling in xfire is superb
    ...

and for the topic wait till gtx 280+ comes and see how it does 8800gtx should do just fine for now :p

I did it, really depends in my case using a 1900x1200 monitor it made a nice differance maxing out games from the 8800GTX you could get a BFG 100day or a eVGA 90day they both have trade up programs just in case a new better card comes out within the next 3 months and it will, cards are comming out every month now :3eyes:
You got to look at it this way, say if there is a 3xxGTX someone will say just wait till the 4xxGTX its comming out soon it never ends, waiting sucks, LOL

Both of my gtx 280's are going back. Big disappointment. Going back to 8800gtx sli. Get the new 4870x2, or wait to see what Nvidia does, but right now the gtx 280 is not much better than your 8800gtx.

ok then i had 8800gtx sli and the upgrade to gtx 280 was imense.
they are a hell of a lot more performace at 1920x1200. crysis last level at very high 16xaa is playable ffs. but anyway i would not go 4870x2 tbh unless your impatiant and want a gfx card that plays games at 2560x1600. wait for nvidias new card. but tbh 4870x2 i will expect to have the same issues as the 9800gx2.
i had a 9800gx2 and it was a lump of utter ****!. i bought it becasue alll the reviews forgot to miss out the fact it rarely works! the gtx 280 will play all games fine at the moment and most likely games like far cry 2 fear 2 and crysis warhead!

I play at 2560x1600 and the only real difference in performance was being able to turn on some aa, and af. You still can't max out the newer games like Age of Conan. Going from 125 fps in Call of Duty 4 to 135 fps doesn't really justify $1000. investment. I can't believe that in 2008 you can't play a $50 video game on a $7000 computer.

Hey isn't this how these threads go..."Hey man your *insert currently owned card's name here* is crap, but dont get the *insert latest high-end offering here*, its crap too ,instead wait for the *insert rumoured 'next-gen' cards name here* "

Basically keep waiting and waiting and waiting lol :)

The GTX 280 beats the 8800GTX pretty handily. Not sure why you would say that...when benches/real world games say otherwise. Sure, there is definitely some driver/game code improvements to make to take advantage of it even more. But still, the 8800GTX is no match for a 280.

Yea, but what game really requires all that performance? Most play fine under a single 8800GTX.

To the guy below me Very True man. The 8800 was the move from pixel pipelines!!! to micro Processors. so thats why there was such a big jump. but its a chip off the block and still the 8800's are Power full. the only engines challenging them is unreal games and crytek at the moment. we where all shocked when the 8800 bench marks came out but those speeds are now...... Doubled!!! so i think thats the Q to upgrade.

For my Quote, you know ATi has been slammed alot in the past mostly becouse Nvidia Fan Boys hated them and Nvidia was a head of the game. but what we must all realise is that AMD/ATI may be behind "Rate Now" but do you remember the 9800 ATi days and the sad little NV 5900 days. Ati by no means is a bad company and i think that alot of fan boys are a little scarred now that ATi just might be a head of the game now. yea the 280 is faster.... but the 4870 has Alot of head room. the architecture is amazing and there ahead on the 55nm shrink... the 5870 by ATi might just be the Ground Breaker... you never no. (FYI also: at high res in crysis, the 4870 is better then the 280. just thought you needed to know) and for the price rate now... GOD damn, spend a extra hundred and make the 280 look like a baby with two 4870's.

Drive issues.. the 4870 X2 is actually one board threw one slot. i hear that crysis runs amazing, its crossfire but diffrent. not two PICex slots but one so really its all on the board. its like geting a 4870 that gets twice the FPS. and there drivers aint half bad.

Your's mind and everyone else 8800 is obviously good for some new games like COD4 and maybe COD WAW this fall but!!! this is the big thing! Crysis, unreal, these are the engines games now are useing and will be coming out in. so your at the mid point. i think you got a little time but a upgrade is due soon. id wait till the end of the summer. see whats out. and what to get. rate now we know prices are up. but better hardware is on the way. really when it comes down to it. you have to settle some time. id say 4870 or 4870x2 if you got the money. a 280 is just a waist of 200$
