The memory is - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-023-GS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=817&name=G.Skill%204GB%20DDR2%20PK%20PC2-8500C5%20(2x2GB)%20CAS5%20Dual%20Channel%20Kit%20(F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK) I have ran Everest Cache and memory benchmark and this is what I got - Read - 7060 MB/s Write - 8646 MB/s Copy - 8122 MB/s Latency - 78.5ns Memory Bus - 492.0 MHz Memory Type - Dual Channel DDR2-984 SDRAM (5-5-5-18 CR2) What does this mean? Is it near the 8500MHz speed that I paid for? The CPU info is this if it helps - CPU Type - Quad Core Q9450 CPU Clock - 3280.2 MHz (original: 2.667MHz, overclock: 23%) CPU FSB 410.0MHz (original: 333 MHz, overclock: 23%) Does this seem like a decent overclock?
Your write and copy speeds are decent, but your read speed is low and your latency is high. Anyway, PC-8500 = 1066MHz (8500 divided by 8). Your actual speed is 984MHz, (memory bus 492MHz times 2 = DDR2-984) which is not all that bad.
Thanks very much for the explanation! Sounds good to me! Just wanted to know that I got what I paid for! How come some 8500 speed Ram is advertised as being overclocked to 1066MHz? Thanks again!
Well i know, but hes asking why is 8500 overclocked... but it isnt, when 8500Mhz memory is rated at 1066, how can it be overclocked if its stock speed is 1066mhz... lol :3eyes: I know 1066Mhz memory is an 800Mhz DIMM rated to run at that speed, but technically its only overclocked if its faster than its stock speed of 1066, which makes 8500 its own entity. Slient Bob: To lower the latency and increase the read speeds, id suggest you read up an article on memory timings, and get the basics of how to change them and to what values.
Cheers, but I'll be fine at the speed its at lol Im just happy to know its near enough what it should be! Thanks for all the responses!
The reason you're RAM is probably slightly slower than it should be is just the divider you're using on your overclock, so i wouldnt be worried
But, why are you running you RAM at 984MHz ? when def. speed is 1066MHz ? Why not 1025MHz ( 2.5x mutliplier with your 410FSB )
I dont know! I bought the PC from Chillblast and they said the speed may be slower due to the overclocking of the CPU or something! All I know is that this PC blows my old Pentium 4 away! Im just converting a film onto DVD using convert to DVD. On the old PC it took about 1hr 30mins, on this it takes 20mins! Thats cool! And the Samsung Spinpoint F1's are fast as hell!
Oh..so you're not much into overclocking I guess. Well it's all alright, just you can run it at 1025MHz by just setting a divider so, to get 2.5x multiplier on RAM, but it's ok if you're into it, as said, it's already pretty fast
Hey! Just thought Id give an update to those who helped me out! I got my PC back and to my suprise, inside was some brand new Corsair Dominator memory! Apparently the old memory was unstable and now the PC is flying! Only been on it for half an hour but first impressions are good! Thanks for all the help guys? One more question! I have everest running and it reports the CPU temp as 32'C but Core 1,2,3 and 4 are on average about 55'C? Which do I beleive? Id like to think that its 32'C but that seems low! I think the CPU fan is at 100% however, at least it sounds that way!
32c is the temp of the case of the cpu where as the individual temps (55c in this case) are for each of the four cores, generaly speaking the individual core temps are considered more meaningful.
Well 32c is the CPU temp, but the important temp is core temp. Watch it like this, 32c is the temp across the plate of the CPU, and 50-ish is on the cores inside the CPU. So always watch the core temp.
Thanks for the 2 replies! So do you think around 50'C is alright? I have an arctic freezer pro CPU cooler! I know its not the best but as long as these temps are safe then Im happy!
I just downloaded Real Temp 2.60 and the temps are - Core Temperature 46'C 39'C 45'C 45'C This seems better than what Everest was reporting!
