I highly doubt that the memory has VERY VERY LITTLE to do with it because:

    I had 2x7800 GTs SLI 256 MB a pop 550/1300

Used my friends card 7900GTX single stock

My cards scored equal or higher on most ingame benchmarks.

When I used his card it might have had a bit slower FPS but the games ran WAY WAY WAY smoother with not studders whatsoever. With my 7800GTs the game had equal or higher FPS but just seemed much more studdery and laggy even though the FRAPS said i was getting higher FPS.

That was just from my experience, seemed like the 512MB of memory made that much of a difference.

Oh yeah also, think you guys misread the OP, he ALREADY has the 8600gs came bundled with his setup.

    More memory=better

HOWEVER, you were comparing the 8600 GPU to the 8800 GPU and saying how it ran smoother because it had more memory. I PROMISE a 256MB 8800GT would run smoother than a 1GB 8600GT, ANYDAY. Even the 8800GS trashes the 8600's.

Is that a little digg at us or am I just conspiring for no reason... :)

I can howevver CLEARLY comment on the fact that nothing I have ever heard or seen beats the X-Fi! Lovely piece of Sound card there.

Would it be possible to do a 3DMark with AA enabled using the 8600GS. Say 4x? And the same for the 7800GT...

dat was appreciations :p I've not posted for quite sometime and hapy wit da replies as we can see many VS. questions being asked.

ya da xfi really showed me wat really sounds should b. cant affort to leave it out of da case

I also remember previous playin C&C3 everything high (default forceware settings) was smooth on 78gt. Now 86gs on Crysis everything low was strugglin at 15-23fps.

And I can clearly state that nothing I have ever heard or seen beats the Auzentech X-Fi Prelude, brilliant sound card :)

Oh well, actually I can't, but I do love it :D

WTF! Mem-Modded.....LOL! So by this you mean I can mod my 9600gt to 4gb of memory.... But seriously check out some benchmarks...the 7 series doesn't seem to like newer games. Although I doubt that the 8600 gs is fast enough though... Now the 8600 Gt DDR3 is almost on par in newer games using the new forceware drivers. And memory amount has little to do with performance unless the card is powerful enough 8800GT 256 < 8800GT 512MB = 8800GT 1024MB but only up to certain point.....

that 3dmark06 score sounds pretty good, mine SLI with my Q6600 @ 3.2 does around 7300-7400. i dunno what kind of HDR problems youre havin, Far Cry did it fine for me with SLI (havent tried oblivion since I sli'ed), HL2 HDR works fine, and i can run crysis on all medium settings at 1280x1024 just fine.

I wish I could put these GTX's with a Q6600 in 3DMark06 just to see how it scores. If I'm scoring 8K with my lowly Opteron at 2.7, then I'm sure 9K would be doable with an overclocked quad.

i think the big defrence is the bus speed, 128 on the 8600GT and 256 on the 7800GT.
Both cards are very dated, and i agree with the rest, if your going to pop the case, id get a 9600GT or 8800GT, at the least.

    as above
it is just not worth the money
9600gt performs better.yea, is more expensive, but...cheapo anyway and got exellent price/performance ratio

Bus speed? You mean memory interface.

    128 bit 8600GT
    vs
    256 bit 7800GT

But I have 1 Q though, is 430w~12v1+12v2=26a enuff for 1.1v oc`ed 88gt? I notice when I forgot to plug da power, this GPU beeps none stop. PNY mention this hapens when GPU is not getting enuff power. But is there any visual/audible indications psu rating is not adequate for our system? Crash/Hang/Bsod? Anything else? Thanks much again...
