According to AMD's Dirk Meyer we can expect a significant number of new products from AMD in May and according to TG Daily this will actually include the Radeon HD 4800 series. The desktop versions should arrive soon but the RV770-based FireGL workstation boards aren't expected until mid-August. The clockspeeds of these new GPUs are still subject to change but the site mentions the Radeon HD 4870 will be clocked above 1GHz and the Radeon HD 4850 will have a frequency of about 800MHz. The chips will support both GDDR3 and GDDR5 memory and will feature 32 texture memory units (TMUs). The new graphics card generation is expected to become available to system integrators and OEMs in GDDR3/GDDR5 variants with 256/512/1024 MB buffers. 256 MB GDDR3 cards are exclusively targeted at OEMs (as well as ODMs, Sis) and are unlikely to shop up in retail. Expect to see mainly 512 MB GDDR5 cards in retail for both the 4850 and 4870. Just like the GPU, the memory clock isn't set in stone either, but we were told that the GDDR5 memory is currently running at a physical clock of 1.8 - 2.2 GHz. With a 256-bit memory controller, we're talking about 115 to 141 GB/s of bandwidth. This number equals the memory bandwidth record set by the 2900XT 1GB GDDR4 (512-bit interface with GDDR4 at 1.1 GHz DDR). All specs are of course speculation, yet it looks like May is going to be an interesting month for sure. http://www.guru3d.com/newsitem.php?id=6843 yeahh baby..
Great news! I can't wait to see some benchmarks of these beasts! I hope ATi takes the lead from Nvidia. Then we might see a burst of new graphics cards in the market.
I'm liking this new naming scheme, so much less confusing. Hopefully they do well, that would mean better AMD CPUs too.
but one they get to the 9870 series it could get confusing eventually but thats a long ways off I had one customer refuse to get a 8800 series card because he had an ATI 9800 series card and thought it was better because of the number...
well if the specs are correct then the HD4870 has double the bandwide of my card..so it should be equivalent with a crossfire of HD3870..and the HD4870x2 should be equivalent with a crossfire of HD3870x2..i hope..
well theres more to it than that, you have to take into account the performance hit by inefficency by crossfire. Despite this where crossfire is supported properly I suspect that the 3870's in crossfire will have too much for the 4870.
I wouldn't call people like that idiots; I would call them illiterate, ignorant, and naive when it comes to computers!
This is so cool! That means 3870 prices will soon drop and I'll be trying some of that crossfire mojo... Except if the new cards are MUCH better than 2 3870s in crssfr!
Do you think they are x-fire backwords compt? Like the 38x0 and the 36x0 series? Could i get a 4850 and xfire it with my current 3850? c1:
i don't think that would be possible...cause as far as i know ATI announced that the new HD4xxx series will have different architecture...i don't it can be possible to crossfire two cards with different architecture.
38xx and 2900 were basically the same chip and architecture and there was no crossfire between them so i doubt it also.
i cant wait. i hope they perform alot better then my 3870. if they do im defiantly getting the 4870x2
