I haven't even gotten a chance to sit down and enjoy my new video card yet and I noticed it idles at 50 degrees. So I took it apart to see that instead of thermal paste there is some crusty grey crap which doesn't even make proper contact with the heatsink. I replaced it with Arctic Silver 5 and that didn't affect squat, it now idles at 49 degrees. The heatsink on this thing is a piece of crap and can't be screwed on tightly because it would strip the cheapass screws, way to go BFG.

So I'll take a stab in the dark and assume 45-50 degrees idle is the normal range? What are your idle and max temps guys?

Now normally I would start some stress tests and set up the fan speeds and everything but... I'm using Vista 64 so ATiTool doesn't work (assuming it works at all for GeForce 8s). I know RivaTuner allows the fan speed to be controlled but I don't see an option to set it up to automatically change speeds based on temperature like ATiTool has, that and it doesn't seem to have its own stress test. What should I do?

I have a superclocked 8800 GT and it idles at about 57 degrees after I replaced the original thermal compound with Arctic Silver 5. The load temps get to about 92 degrees.

    50C idle for me, around 65-70C after a few 3Dmark 06 loops.

Your card should have dynamic fan speed, which is dictated by the card`s BIOS. In that case, it doesn`t need Rivatuner to work.

Dont worry if the temps get to around 85-90 its fine for the 8 series they can handle it..

infact ANY nvidia card can handle upto 90 easily.
Its just the people scared of temps say "it will shorten life"
What? shorten its life from 10 years to 9 years....lol

Mine idles at about 37C, pretty decent but then again I also have my case pretty well ventilated.

Hm-m-m-m...Lets see 90 degrees Celcius = 215 degrees F and times 2 for SLI that is 430 F with my SB Audigy ZS sandwitched in between.... Guess thats supposed to take that much heat.....????? don't think so.....I got two BFG GT's but keep the Fan speeds up so even in Crysis they don't get over 68 C ....My fans run 60% at idle and with good case cooling run at 44 - 45c.... I would not advise that much heat for any electronic componets...Just my 2cents..... BTW have had SB's go up in smoke before....

Hehehe that has to be the funniest post of the year. Just because you have 2 cards running at 90C, it doesn`t mean that it`s 180C between them! Temperatures don`t work like that.

49c currently (fan set to 46%; it totally lacks dynamic fan control).

90 C is only the GPU core, it will be much less than that in the case around the card, if there is decent case cooling.

But I agree, you don`t wanna push your luck going much higher than 90. I managed to toast an x1900xt by going above 120C for a few minutes, because I didn`t fit the aftermarket cooler properly... :bang:

How's it going FireK, my EVGA 8800GT temps with stock original cooler were as follows using Rivatuner 2.06 set at 55% Fan Speed.

    Idle - 46c-48c
    Load - 65c-68c

You can also set Rivatuner to ramp fan speeds up according to temperature as well. You just need to setup profiles. Take a look at the Rivatuner Forum here at Guru3D or this link which also has pics of the process ....

Idles at avg 50, Gaming avg 67. Fan speed is at 70%. Your temps seem fine! 90 is pushing it, but ok.

i think Asus uses the same Coolermaster sink that Galaxy does? pretty sure, not that it matters ;)
