back with some test results :)

the mod from mobility hd2600 to firegl v5600 was a success.
for those who will tell me the equivalent to the v5600 is the hd 2600xt

    - it does not matter, since the only difference between the hd 2600xt and the hd 2600 is the faster clocks for the hd2600xt.
So it does not matter if you turn your hd 2600 mobility into an v3600 or v5600, since enabling the opengl acceleration does not have anything
to do with the clocks for core or memory of the card.

but now for the pleasant part :
my hd 2600 mobility is now a mobility firegl v5600
the card is stockclocked with 500mhz/600mhz for core and memory (gddr3)
    tested with specviewperf 9.03
    Code:
    Run All Summary

    ---------- SUM_RESULTS\3DSMAX\SUMMARY.TXT
    3dsmax-04 Weighted Geometric Mean = [B]32.67[/B]

    ---------- SUM_RESULTS\CATIA\SUMMARY.TXT
    catia-02 Weighted Geometric Mean = [B]30.23[/B]

    ---------- SUM_RESULTS\ENSIGHT\SUMMARY.TXT
    ensight-03 Weighted Geometric Mean = [B]23.12[/B]

    ---------- SUM_RESULTS\LIGHT\SUMMARY.TXT
    light-08 Weighted Geometric Mean = [B] 34.56[/B]

    ---------- SUM_RESULTS\MAYA\SUMMARY.TXT
    maya-02 Weighted Geometric Mean = [B]109.2[/B]

    ---------- SUM_RESULTS\PROE\SUMMARY.TXT
    proe-04 Weighted Geometric Mean = [B]28.29[/B]

    ---------- SUM_RESULTS\SW\SUMMARY.TXT
    sw-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = [B]65.28[/B]

    ---------- SUM_RESULTS\TCVIS\SUMMARY.TXT
    tcvis-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = [B]20.33[/B]

    ---------- SUM_RESULTS\UGNX\SUMMARY.TXT
    ugnx-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = [B]18.32[/B]
even easier than patching the driver to use the pro opengl features is getting the control panel to work.

    - just go the cpanel folder, open the cpanel.dat with the editor ( rightclick it)
    - at the bottom of the text you´ll find a line that starts with Req_ASIC=
    - in this line you´ll find the device id´s for the cards that make use of the professonal settings, just add you card here, or change one of the values there into your cards device id, and voila you have the pro settings in your control panel.

    best

I'm trying the FireGL mod on the mobility HD2600, having BSOD issues in Windows after a few minutes. "Infinite Loop" errors in the ATI drivers. OpenGL performance kicked way up though. Hope we can make it work.

EDIT: OK, disabled ATITrayTools and it's working. Basically, no overclocking of the GPU will happen. ATITool caused similar lockups. Not getting the same performance I had in BF2, need to run more tests.

    @ scottys

yeah, you will probably loose some performance in directx, since the 8.391 driver is based on the cat7.7.
I figured a loss in 3dmark06 from around 130 points.
    with cat 7.12 i had around 3440 points and with the cat7.7 ( 8.391) i had only 3316 points.

But don´t forget this mod is not intended for gaming !!

I tried the FireGL driver with 2600xt 512MB and 2900pro 512MB, but they didn't really work with real CATIA models. When the models are bigger than simple test models, it just crashes while loading.
I tried old and new driver to the both cards. Driver installation was okay, and I could even run viewperf without any problem. but no CATIA with real models.

this might not actually be a problem of the graphics card, but the whole system.

i´ve seen maya 2008 crash with scenes bigger than 13 million polygons on different laptops and desktop machines. tested this with a hd 2600mobilty / a 8600m gt, a quadro fx1500 and a quadro fx1600.
You have to consider that not only the graphics card is involved when opening a big scene.

might i ask how you managed to create the scene ?

I opened my existing models with CATIA, small files with couple of parts had no problem. With large projects, CATIA just crashes while opening the files.
CATIA had no problem with the latest radeon driver for both 2600xt and 2900pro. I also noticed the modded driver failed in OpenGL 2.1 test with OpenGL extension viewers, while the radeon driver had no problem. I'll try with my other system later.

    ---
    Here is update.

After some trials with other machine, I figured it is the problem with CATsettings of CATIA. Once I deleted the existing CATsettings, it works!
However there are some glitches though.
    schoko. Thanks for the tip.

Are XP64bit drivers available now for the X2xx series cards?

Have the poly selection bugs in Maya/XSI using the modded drivers been resolved ?

    @ vijaynair

well, x64 drivers for the x2xxx series have not yet been released. but we have a patchscript for the x1xxx series for x64 and a patchscript for x1xxx and x2xxx series for xp 32.

i had a look into the ati2mtag.sys from the new driver 8.44 and the patchscript for the 8.391 driver. with some researching it should be possible to modifiy the patchscript ( xp 32) for the new driver.

i´m gonna post my findings her in the next two days. i hope there is someone here that can read the hex stuff.

concerning the poly selection bug - well, i guess that one is solved.
the driver that was published here was an early version of the 8.391 driver.

the 8.391 driver had two updates since it´s first release, and the last one dated in late october 2007 seems to have the selection bug and the poly selection lag resolved.

with the patchscript i posted it´s possible to mod the driver for the desktop cards.
download the latest version of the 8.391 driver ( 8.391.2.1.1.1) and patch the driver yourself.

    Code:
    Common]
    SrcFile = ati2mtag.sys
    BakFile = ati2mtag.old

This is an awesome thread I must say.

First time post at this forum and have a couple questions:

Has anyone flashed a 2900Pro to a 2900XT and then tried this softmod?

Is crossfire of two softmodded cards possible?

Definitely looking into this option but really waiting until xp64 drivers are availabe....

I'm not sure about 2900 Pro to v8600. FireGl cards natively don't have Crossfire so the modded cards won't.

the v7600 supports crossfire in one model but not in the other.

    Have a look:

    supports:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814195051

    Doesnt support:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814195052

I've seen some openGL benchmarks on consumer level cards - crossfire vs. non crossfire and the non-crossfire scored higher. I dont know if it would be worth it ultimately.

Just wondering if anyone can say definitively from experience that the poly selection and explorer bugs are worked out? I am looking to buy a card soon and if it is then I think I will be getting a 2600xt. It is not super pressing that I get a new card right away and will be checking back so even if it's in the future (ooooooo the future!) if someone could post when this is ironed out I would much appreciate it. Thanks!

My 2600xt, 512mb still has selection bug. No matter what I try in Win XP i have it. I "solved" it by moving to Vista and instaling original Radeon drivers. It works ok, but with high poly scenes the selection lag becomes an issue, but at least it selects the right object.

is this only an issue with the 2600XT? Do other cards (the 2900 Pro) have the same problem?

Can someone please, with this driver mod done (2900/2600) test this benchmark for 3DSMAX

    http://rapidshare.com/files/3108339/bmark4.rar.html

unrar, and start the script (first time it never start, but second is allright)

here is some test for comparing

and I think that second version of 8.391 that schoko talks about is the one we have been using for the last few months, isn't it?
