What you're looking for are instrumental tracks, not very common nowadays, at least from what I've seen. Anyways these are the ones that I know of:

The Living End - Closing In, Ape Face, E-Boogie (Closing In is very cool, especially for the guitarist. Same goes for E-Boogie however this is a live only track, it is on live DVDs however I doubt you'd want to get it just for one song).

The Shadows - Most of their songs, only a few have vocals.

Stray Cats - Sleepwalk (slow song, but not slow playing if you get what I mean).

I am pretty sure I have more but just don't remember them, or can't find them.

Just wondering, is this for a music project? I could see why you need instrumentals, but there are some songs out there that are good music wise which have vocals.

King Crimson has some instrumental tracks I believe. Buckethead is pure instrumental and he does a wide variety of music, some of which is classical in nature (Padmasana comes to mind.) You might say his classical stuff still has a hint of psychedelic to it, but in the 60s everything was considered psychedelic/out there because it was new to the music scene.

The Ocean- Fogdiver ENTIRE ALBUM(Extremely heavy, but no vocals whatsoever)

the ret of these are songs by certian groups.

    Dream Theater-Stream of Consciousness
    Overture 1928
    Erotomania

Chimaira- Implements of Destruction (another heavy but no vocals)

Unearth- Big Bear and the Hour of Chaos ( Heavy to start, beautiful mid and closes hard)

Trivium - The Crusade ( good Iron maiden/ Metallica sounding instrumental)

Daylight Dies - Dismantling Devotion (Wonderfully beautiful instrumental)

Also try some Opeth, they are AMAZING. Most of thier stuff is 60% pure instrumental godlieness and 20% and 20% death vocal and awesome singing.

^ I second, third and pass this post to LAW.

Joe Satriani is the Master of his guitar!!
Not only does his music sound really cool, but it borderlines on IMPOSSIBLE to replicate exactly...

I need to add Tony McAlpine, Chris Impelliteri and a few random songs from Steve Vai, Frank Zappa (without which there'd be no Steve Vai), & Yngwie Malmsteen to the list!!

Yngwie Malmsteen does a lot of instrumetal, infact his first album "Rising Force" is all instrumental, the guy is easily one of the worlds best guitarists too.

You want classic instrumental, look no further than good oh Jeff Beck. Most of his cuts are instrumental. Google it or go to Amazon to listen to samples. To of my favorites albums are Blow by Blow and Wired.

    Here's a site with some samples: http://www.jeffbeckmusic.com/

    Cheers!

Late 60s early 70s rock had plenty of instrumentals.

Try Pink Floyd or early Mike Oldfield albums
