Hey guys, been forever since i've visited the forums. I think its time for me to upgrade my rig again. Current specs: Athlon 2800+, 1gig pc3200, ati x800gt 256mb agp. Thinking of upgrading to possibly a dual core Core 2 duo, 2gigs of ram and maybe a nvidia 8600 gts pci-e. The question is, will i be in for a big change compared to my current specs? Is it worth the upgrade? Thanks for any info. P.S. I'm not noob when it comes to PC hardware, just wondering what you all think:wanker:

You may want to spend alittle more on that video card.

If you are gonna upgrade then go for a quad core q6600 wont cost much more than a core2 duo and will be better for future apps/games. For a littlle extra you could also get a 8800gt which will more then double your gaming experience in comaprison to a 8600gts, after theses changes you'll notice quite an improvement.

The video card is far more important than a quad core cpu. Totally pointless buying a q6600 and having no money left to buy anything else.
And an 8800GT is more than 'a little extra' more than an 8600gt, like over twice the price. Be realistic.

Dont know where you live but here in the uk a 'Quad-core' q6600 costs the same as a e6600 between £130 and £150 and unless you wanna buy something which is less than a e6600 its not worth the effort, secondly a 8800gt 512mb costs around £150 while an 8600gts 512mb costs around £115.

You could also buy the 256mb varients which would cost £115 and £90 respectively.

So I dont think the above poster is being 'Realistic' and should check before posting, maybe its because they have lost track with the 'real' market value of newer pc components :)

Sorry i thought he said 8600gt when it was infact a gts. But other than that i think it's the above poster that has lost track on current market value and should 'check' himself;)

Firstly, the guys obviously on a budget and picked the cpu, ram and gts in with his budget.

He doesn't need a Q6600 at this moment in time whatsoever. By the time he does it'll be far cheaper than it is now and will certainly have been 'replaced' by a newer cpu.
I'm also not sure why you'd mention the older E6600 (being all up to date that you are) when the better E6750 can be had for just £112. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130484
Don't know where you''re getting the Q6600 for £130 from as the cheapest i could find was one for £150 for an OEM version. Do you have a link?

As for the graphics card well then yeah, you will find cheaper cards if you use ebay, but i certainly wouldn't buy expensive hardware from there, buts thats just me.

Anyway you can get a 8600gts for £85 (free del)http://www.ebuyer.com/product/126983
Sadly, your ebay link was the cheapest i could find a 8800GT, so that's £157 (incl del) which is pretty much twice the price. So even though i though he said GT instead of GTS i wasn't far off was i;)

So you pretty much advised parts that would cost him at least £110 more than what he was looking at. He may come on here now and state that he does like the look of your suggestions and is willing to spend more but don't jump the gun.

Firstly I said between £130 and £150 for the cpu where the q6600 falls into the £150 category and vice versa so maybe read it again, secondly again I said around £90 for a 256mb 8600gts version and around £115 for the 256mb 8800gt (which is currently overpriced at £135 due to stock shortages in the uk), seems the above poster had difficulty differentiating between 256 mb and 512 mb versions.

It would also be a good idea to try to be helpful and atleast have the courtesy to read thoroughly what has been said before posting jabs at other people trying to genuinely help.
