Help! My Core Multiplier is going nuts!

    Hi,

My computer has been acting a bit funny and I turned on CPU-z to check it out. It seems my Core Multiplier has lost its mind.

    It goes 5x, 9x, 14x, 5x, 4x, 14x, 13x, etc...

It is supposed to be locked at 15x as this is an AMD X@ 6000+ 3.0 Ghz CPU.

What the heck is going on?

I can think of a couple of possibilities.
Do you have AMD's "Cool-n-quiet" turned on? That might do it, I don't really know how it changes system speed based on needs, but perhaps that is it.

    Corrupted BIOS

    Failing CMOS chip

Any ideas on how to fix those things?

Ah ok solved it. I had reset my CMOS the other day my moving the jumper to see if it would unlock my BIOS.

No luck on unlocking the BIOS, however, it did change Cool & Quiet from "Disabled" to "Auto".

I changed it back to "disabled" and now everything is fine.

I take it "Cool & Quiet" is AMD code for "You can no longer overclock this".

    Thanks for your help!

As far overclocking with it enabled,

    http://forums.firingsquad.com/firingsquad/board/message?board.id=hardware&thread.id=77314

which is a moot point as you have a Gateway computer; and no you can't unlock the bios on it. Actually it can be done if you can find a modified bios specific for your motherboard, but then I have a feeling we would be hearing from you because after trying to flash it the computer became an unbootable doorstop.
