I was just curious to see how many of the fellow Guru's real jobs are related to technology. What do you do and how long have you done it? Me: Computer Tech for NC Dept Waste Management Employed: 2 Months (just picked this job up at the beginning of the school yr) On site help in offices for computer/network/software/printer/perephial problems. Run the help desk over the phone for all supported departments. Software/Novell/Printers setup for new computers coming in and erasing or removing hard drives for computers going out . Novell Network Administrator. Basically anything that involves computers at the DWM. (Also taking 16hrs in Mechanical Engineering @ NCSU (Jr))
I worked for companies Cisco and Nortel Networks deploying, configuring and managing Optical, Enterprise, Carrier and Wireless Networks. I then became an expert in supporting Network Management platforms and now I work in CVoIP and BVoIP supporting an award winning solution. My jobs have always entailed lots of Unix, debugging, scripting. On the side, I build and support PC's for lots of people. I don't keep up on all the PC lingo anymore as I used too but I still know my way around more than most people.
i'm a salesman in a computer shop, occasionally i try to help clients by going to their place and configuring their pc, installing cards and giving a few advice, this earns me some extra cash.
Used to work in tech support at a female clothing retailers head office in london, gave it up and went to college for 2 years now i have my own business and i am a plumber
Support analyst for a big UK Supermarket. 2nd level Desktop/server/application support plus looking after the telecomms for a couple of 500 seat call centres... Also build all my own PCs and do various bits and pieces for friends relatives... Pays the bills
I work as a Chef in a kitchen in Kanata (Ottawa). I do all the emergency tech stuff there. Network support and general PC failure stuff.
I went to college last year but other than a low grade Computer Tech qualification, i have nothing else that would get my foot in the door at the moment. I definitely think i could work in the industry even if it were repairing PC's, but i would like a job with more responsibility than that. I was thinking about getting in to journalism and get a tech related job that way, but i am not so sure my writing would be up to par. I definitely wouldn't want to be a programmer, way too tedious for my liking. Network Engineer, IT Support or something like that would be more suited to me. That said, i think i would quickly get sick of working in tech related job, i would need something with variety, not the same people phoning me up saying 'my monitor isn't working, oh wait, i haven't turned it on yet'.
Systems Administrator Support +300 desktops,22servers,Cisco routers, netscreen firewalls, all vpn sites, veritas backups,WSUS updates servers that are deployed at all 4 sites, Exchange,GPO,AD,Barracuda Spamwall/Spywall,Nessus scanner for possible exploits/vunerbilites
Right now I'm not doing anything tech related for a job. But I'm still very active in this field as a hobby. About a year ago I got some CCNA study material but never stayed on top of it. I'm planning on being a pro photographer in 2-3 years so I'm putting all my focus in that.
Same here... Except it's more like 3000 clients 200 servers... AD, Baracuda, Symantec, Exchange, SQL, those are the major technologies I have my hands in... I work in a Hospital though....
