Ever had a problem where you could not set your monitor's maximum resolution on Vista, but you could on XP? You tried PowerStrip, ResForce, RivaTuner, and every other program you can think of to add resolutions and etc, and still no solution?

Example: My monitor is rated for 1600x1200 @ 75 Hz, but Vista does not allow me to set it.

Well, I have found a solution for that problem!

Download the "OpenGL Fur Rendering Benchmark" from Guru3D (a 1.3 MB download). Install it, run it, and select 1600x1200 radio box. Click Go, and your monitor magically goes to 1600x1200. Hit ESC to quit out of the program.

Now, check Display Settings, and look!

The previously locked 1600x1200 mode on Vista is now unlocked!

After a restart, it still stays unlocked!

I'm thinking more like a generic CRT monitor thing.

    Nice find :)

But my biggest problem with vista has been that I can't force my hz. Can only use 60hz at 1680x1050. I want 75hz :bawl:. With 8800 and vista, im stuck with 60hz.

I have never bothered with installing monitor drivers.

Usually its not needed to install a monitor driver as the monitor tells the OS its max refresh rates for each resolution. But sometimes this communication fails and thats when you need to install the driver for your monitor.

Ofcourse you can also install a third party driver which automagically unlocks a wide range of unsupported resolutions, but that could potentially damage your display. Stick with the monitor driver, but only if you actually need it.

Yeah I think that doesn't happen with most CRT's. At least I've got two bad boy 21"'s here that don't(for the record I have a IBM P275 and a Dell P1130). In vista & xp I get the wrong resolution's and hz. Happened on my old 19" and 17" aswell. I think TFT screens give it automatically.

i dont know what's up with that dude. There has been so many replies about monitor drivers he hasn't considered... That fix is NOT a fix, it is just a matter of drivers...
There is also one thing that needs to be noticed : Vista 64 drivers have less modes than 32 bits ones. If you run vista 64 and can't find a better refresh mode, it is just cause they don't even exist in the driver itself. Same goes for exotic modes for the 32 bit versions.
There is no magical application that adds modes to a driver. Forget this threat.
