games stuttering but fine after rebbot on 8800gts

    Hello.
I seem to be having a bit of an odd problem.
It seems that sometimes, certain games stutter like mad for no apparent reason.
Even old games such as Prince of Persia sands of time.
But after a quick reboot they run smooth as silk.
This doesn't happen all the time, but every now and then.
I wonder what it could be?
I've tried a few different drivers but it doesn't seem to help.
Unfortunately it doesn't happen too often so checking too see if new drivers have helped isn't easy,
I'm currently using the 158.27 drivers.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing this or perhaps even a sollution vould be very helpful.

Sounds most likely like a power issue. Can you check your card in other pc?

Leave your task manager open to record cpu usage while you play games and stuff, and when it starts to stutter, check the task manager to see if your first core is getting overloaded while the second stays at 50-60% usage.

This happens to me sometimes, and by re-assigning the affinity of a few programs (steam/azureus/msn/xfire) to the second core, you free up the first core to deal with games, since most non-multithreaded games send their requests to core 0 first.

    Thanks for the replies.
Last night the stutter appeared, I then rebooted and Prince of persia ran smooth again. The only other thing I did on my computer after that was watch a small quicktime movie. I left the computer on when I went to bed and this morning before work I tried Prince of persia again and it stuttered.
I didnt notice anything special in the task manager.
On the chart while playing the game about 60 -70% of the cpu was in use and about 400 ram or so. That didnt sound very out of the ordinary?
Will test a bit more after work, some other games to see if they are affected aswell.
I dont have any other applications running in xp in the background I might add.

How much time since the last format c? Have you tried to run adaware and spybot or something like that? if it doesn't work I would suggest to do a reformat.

    You really think so?
Kinda odd that it actually seems that pop sands of time is the only affected game so far. All other games runs smooth. Infact pop doesn't exactly run slow it just stutters, sometimes it even runs too fast. It just stutters oddly. Could it really be the power supply? Perhaps it could be that the game doesn't like dual core's? Kinda odd that it doesn't happen if i just reboot the computer tough.

Hi, did you figure out what the problem was?

    I installed POP sands of time on a pc running winxp pro, 8800gts (162.18 FWare), c2d 6750, 2gig ddr2.

And when playing, its seems to stutter, but it more than likely feels like the game is running in fast motion or something, because everything looks too 'quick', like the stuttering movement(he actually runs very fast, giving a stuttering effect), the clothes flapping in the wind etc...

    really weird.......

edit...maybe better to move thread in the gaming section?

I saw that in CMR DIRT sometimes the game went too fast ! lol not to slow and it was funny like very fast for a 1-2 seconds and then back to normal. (of course after this it was a shutter)

after doing some searching, seems a bit too much trouble to get one game to work properly, oh well.

DiRT its a very badly coded game , BioShocK in the other hand its the best example of one of the best coded games ever made , I play both and the difference its like night and day ,bernek its not your hardware bro its the game itself.

    Good Day.
