Well according to wikipedia (and to what I read in other places), bioshock uses an updated vengeance engine (called bioshock engine), which is a heavily modified unreal engine 2.5. They only switched to unreal engine 3 to update the unreal core system, framework and other stuff, but bioshock doesn't actually use all the features of unreal engine 3. A new engine (vengeance 3?) will make full use of the unreal 3 engine, but that'll be used for future games.

Hey, roguesn1per what's the Blacksite Area 51 demo like? I'm really looking forward to it though most people have been telling me it's going to be crap like the first Area 51. I've been reading the preview over at Bit-Tech and they mention the lead developer is Harvey Smith (Deus Ex, Thief series) and the story writer is Susan O'Connor (Bioshock, Gears of War). I think it could be one of the big gaming surprises this year.

its actually pretty good, From the demo..No where near complete though...>the shadows were a bit dodgy....But the effects were sweet....And the Aliens are good, Like mini tripods from war of the worlds.....You shoot them then there head can jump off and run at you.

If u got a 360, Dload the demo has a nice ending....Very short though

Alas, I have no 360, I'll have to wait for the pc version. I see they chose not to ask Duchovny or Marilyn Manson back this time around :)

Oh yeah, I forgot to say it uses the Stranglehold engine (modified UE3 as has been mentioned already).

There is no one verion of the Unreal 3 engine, its constantly being improved, even Epic said the new PC content for GoW wont be compatible with the older 360 version due to changes in the engine and that the latest version has huge performance optimizations.

Rainbow 6 Vegas uses a crappy version of the Unreal 3 engine, which was some form of prerelease version of U3/Hybrid 2.5/3 version, ive read somewhere that even the U3 modding tools may not work with the Vegas maps/models etc.

And im glad Vegas uses a really old version, cos its performance totally sux so hopefully the newer titles wont be so bad

NO IT DIDN'T it used a later build of UE3 that even Gears Of War used...the perfomance was poor because it was a rapid port from Xbox code and was not as optimised for the PC as it could have been.

It used the older version devs received before Gears released, this is the basis of that Lawsuit against Epic because SK felt it should have had something decent to work with beforehand. This is why people are skeptical of UE3 games, no one knows if it`s going to be old code, or newer, optimized revisions of the engine. On top of that it wasn`t optimized for the PC much, like you said.

The Silicon Knights lawsuit regarding their grievance with Epic has nothing to do with which revision of UE3 Ubisoft used for R6:V - even if they did start off with an older version no doubt a company such as Ubisoft would have suffecient clout and money to recieve updated versions throughout development.

    GOW Engine Build 3706
    R6:V Engine build 4604

Not that any of this matters as long as these games are of a decent standard, regardless of their engine.

A 2006 game doesnt use U3 engine, it uses the Unreal 2 engine, same as UT2k4 ,,,

the first U3 engine ut game is stranglehold pc demo, then UT3 then Gears ,,,,

these other games u all talkin about use Unreal 2.0 engine with enhancments and tweaks,,

There is currently no Unreal 3 Engine game you can buy for PC ,,,, period!
