Ok so i'm building a new system and had planned to buy 2gb corsair pc6400 CL4 for around £80. I have just seen 2gb of pc8800 going for around the same price on ebay. What I want to know is if it is worth buying? I'm not worried about it being 2nd hand etc, just in terms of speed and overclcoking. I am purchasing a Gigabyte P35C-DS3R and a c2d E4400. This is the memory - http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Comp...C2-8800+Gold+Edition+(2x1GB)+?productId=24374
Having gone the other way (downgraded from OC freindly RAM to standard RAM) I can honestly say I miss it for games. I can't tweak my CPU as high either. If you're not going to bust your bank balance, I'd go for it. Anyone like to disagree?
The only problem I might have just found is achieving good timings with the motherboard I am buying. I read some reviews which said they need 2.4/2.5v to achieve cl4 Am I right in thinking faster ram like this can achieve very tight timings when lowered to say 667mhz?
They appear to be extremely fexible. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/memory/display/corsair-dominator_4.html http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/OCZ/PC2-8800Gold/3
Aye that's quite interesting thx damien! Any ideas on what I said about the motherboard not being able to increase memory voltage to get a decent oc?
The actual pc8800 version of the OCZ ram isn't in there, should I look at the pc8500 versions? So far what i've read tells me with the motherboard I am planning to get I wont be able to overclock far due to limiting what I can do with the voltage. Can anyone recommend another board for under £100 that will allow me to do so? Much appreciated! One other quick question, do I need a board which can take higher than pc6400? I've read that the ram can run at 475mhz(950) with 4-4-4-10 timings and 2.4 volts. Would a board which only takes 800mhz handle this?
heres a great modo in ur price range for c2d looks like a good mobo and supports ddr2 +3 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-243-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=913
Thx again that motherboard looks really nice! This motherboard gives you 8-step voltage control to the DIMM Am I right in thinking the default voltage is 1.8 and an 8-step control will let me go all the way to 2.6? Thx again
2gb corsair pc6400 CL4 i have 4gb of this stuff the ones with 4-4-4-12 timings as i am running x64pro & it is mint stuff... i have overclocked mine to 449speed instead off 400 but they can go higher but i only have a 4600am2 at 2.65.
