I have got a 6800gs (agp) - 350MHz Core Engine Clock speed - 256MB 1000MHz high speed GDDR3 memory - Superscalar 12-Pipe GPU Architecture - High-Speed DDR 256-bit Memory Interface - Dual 400MHz RAMDACs what is a safe over clock for this card and i have been told you can unlock more pipelines how is this done and is it safe to do so or would it be better to open the pipelines but no overclock.Any help would be great thanks.
Hello, only the nv40 cores can be unlocked, and there is a very good success rate for unlocking the GS's. I had a BFG 6800GS agp, loved the card! Unlocked to 16/6 up to 422/1124mhz. If you are using stock cooling then I suggest you try to unlock the extra pipes and keep stock speeds. If those extra pipes are indeed broken, then try overclocking a bit, just watch the temps. Anything over 80c is no good, preferably 70c or lower. The extra pipes will add a degree or two, as will overclocking, so I'd only recommend doing one or the other with stock cooling. Good luck!!! (Now that I think about it, I kind of miss my old GS ) EDIT: As was said above, use RivaTuner to overclock/unlock, best little program I've ever used, EVER! Just GOOGLE the procedure to unlock the pipes...
As far as I know, just heat / power consumption issues. You really shouldn't have to worry about power with your power supply, though.
6800GS AGP are really good card. Riva tuner will unlock them if they are not damaged, but usually they arent As for the OC I could go really far, but soon after I reached such speed I started to get artifacts because one of the AGP power connector started to burn. 430/1100 is a perfect OC. Yes you can probably go higher, but the increase in FPS is almost nothing. Aquamark3 is a really good bench program to test if your OC is successfull or not. But a safe spot I would'nt go further this time is 420/100 An aftermarket will keep your card cooler and less noisy. What is your brand? Because eVGA 6800GS run really hot!
Well it depend what game your playing. Theres not really a way to tell. But If locked you get 50fps, unlocked I suppose it would be 62fps. Try it, you'll see.
run benchmarks locked and benchmarks unlock to see the difference. if the pipelines are damaged you`ll know
oh i havent one it yet. Ill get back to you guys afterward. it should be unlockable since the previous owner ran it unlocked and overclocked.
Ok ive ran the benchmarks. The problem is that i was not able to unlock to 16 ps, only able to do 6 vs. At 16 pixel shader i got massive artifacts. so instead of 12/5 im now at 12/6. 12/5 3dmark03 = 9132 3dmark05 = 4305 12/6 3dmark03 = 9282 3dmark05 = 4445 By unlocking 1 vertex shader i get about 1-2 fps increase in games. So it didnt really do much for me.
