****FANBOYS OF ANY CONSOLE NEED NOT POST IN THIS THREAD****

    Hi peeps,

I've been looking into buying a PS3 when it pops it's head up this month in the UK. I've had the XBox 360 for a few months, and to be honest apart from the excellent online capabilities, I don't find it that great.

Yes I know some of the games are supposedly amazing but none really struck me as next-gen, neither did any really hold my attention for very long.

I'm a PC gamer at heart and I'm using my rig for work at the moment, I've built many rigs over the years, I'll be building a DirectX10 rig late this year / early next. So I've seen high end visuals and great physics all before. What I really want is the sort of immersion a lot of PC games tend to offer.

So I'd appreciate a honest response from current PS3 owners. Is it worth buying yet, if at all? Has Sony once again managed to hype the PS3 beyond it's actual worth? Does it run games smoothly? Is the lack of rumble a big deal? No online chat, is that a pain?

I've had a look at the launch titles, to be honest nothing looks great at the moment but I'm willing to overlook that, I know it takes a good year before developers start kicking out decent titles.

Anything you think may help my decision will be appreciated.

Please NO fanboy replies, just honest opinions.

EDIT: If you think any available games are worth my attention, please do say.

My neighbor owns a PS3, and I have to say. The PS3 is a good and fun console. Plus, you get a Blu Ray player for cheaper than buying a just a blu ray player. The only down side to the PS3 IMHO, is that to save your ps2 games, you need to buy a USB adapter. Not that big of a deal, same with guitar hero. You need a USB to PS2 controller adapter to play it. Still not that big of a deal.

I was on this very same dilemma not long ago, and i bought the ps3, i have tosay the lack of games has been dissapointed but youre picking a really good month to pick one up. Ironically the game i play the most is the motorstorm demo and its a LOT of fun!
Just buy it you wont be disappointed, make sure you have an HDCP monitor or HDTV.

    Cheers!

I would personally wait a little while. With some luck the price will go down and there will be more games out to choose from. The blue-ray player built in is a nice bonus if you're into your movies etc. I personally intend on getting one at some point, though probably not until further down the line for the above reasons.

I wouldn't say the price is fully dependent on Sony. If anything, and that being the case, I'll simply wait until a store near me has a sale sometime down the line. It mostly comes down to what games the console can offer when price is removed from the equation. Right now I can't say much impresses me. Though there are a number of titles which capture my interest set for release in the future.

What's that gonna do if you want to continue playing your PS2 games that you have save files on already? Yeah, the virtual memory card is good if you're starting a new game, or replaying a game. But not if you want to continue a game.

I got a import JP PS3 for £270 with delivery to the UK,its a good console overall and at the price i paid i am more than happy with it, so far i have 4 games,R@Fall of man,Motorstorm,RR7 and Marvel Alliance.

Unlike the 360 it connects via the HDMI socket and i have to say that it does seem to be that little bit sharper then the component connection on the HDTV.

    Pros...
    It only cost me £270.
    Its very quiet.
    I just upgraded the 20gig HD to a 120gb for £50.
The sixaxis motion controller is light and does work well.
The JP blue-ray is the same region as the US so blue-ray movies will be cheaper to buy from there than from here in the UK.

    The cons..
There are not really any must have games except R:FOM and MS.
There is no rumble in the sixaxis pad.
There is no HDTV cables in the box.
The UK price tag is a joke.
Some old PS1/2 games look terrible on it.

As much as I would love a PS3, there is only one thing holding me back.

And that's money, even more when I don't have a job currently. Buying a JP PS3 would probably be cheaper, but right now I can't afford it. I would like a ps3, but money right now isn't agreeing with me, but saying "Hey, Vincent! You suck, you can't have me cause your poor lololololololololz"

M8..........i just want to tell you a little insight. If you have played GOW you might end up being disappointed by Resistance. I do not mean to bash the game but its a little bit overrated. I tried the game at work and i can say that the game is not bad but they could have done a little better on it. Though i can say only this..........Play the game and judge for yourself because in the end its your opinion that counts. By the way try finding the game at a store where they have it running and play it for a little while if you can. (a place like Best buy - if you guys have it there or something similar to it.)

Well I just got a Ps3 3 days ago right after getting a nice 52" 1080p LCD HDTV, got Resistance:FoM and I must admit even though I'm a PC fanboy at heart, the graphic power of the PS3 really impressed me with this game, specially when I got to that war zone lvl in R:FoM. 2nd generation games are gonna look great. Playing R:FoM, Virtua fighters 5 and Fight night.... that should keep me busy till heavenly sword and MGS4 comes out. Originally I was saving the money for a rig but than decided to get the TV and PS3 for games aswell as an entertainment system to watch HD movies, so far I haven't regretted going that route, bought the movie Crank for PS3's blu-ray, it looked great I'm happy with the decision. I'm saving for that rig again which I'll prolly get before crysis comes out :p.

For me personally I can see little reason to own a PS3 other than a Blu-Ray player. I have an Xbox360 with a HDDVD drive and the exclusive PS3 games from that above list aren't games which I am bothered about. Or if I am bothered about them and might want to get them, they are at least a year away. Like Driver 5 or The Getaway..... even then. I'm not sure they are worth investing in a whole console for. Games like Spiderman 3 (Sony movie!!) coming out in the Xbox and GTA4 releasing at the same time on both consoles. There isn't any advantage for the PS3 in regards to the mulitformat games.
On the Blu-Ray side. There are the Spiderman films, a few pixar films and Casino Royale which I would want. Plus, eventually, some Fox TV series and older titles. But I could wait for those. A multi format player might be a better investment.
Then there's the PS3's price tag in the UK. I am a playstation owner, I had 1 and 2...... And Sony's clear disdain, or worse, indifference for the UK/European market doesn't make me want to run out and buy a PS3. I'm not too keen on buying an import because of Blu-Ray regions. I can see it causing problems in the future.
Plus I'm not too bothered about Motorstorm or Resistance. So there is really no "must have" games at all for me.
So I might "want one", as I want everything. I can't justify it to myself. It would be sitting doing nothing most of the time.
So that's my answer..... I wouldn't recommend anyone to get one...
Plus if the question was asked me again in 18 months time, I have no idea of my answer. Which is another reason against buying one now, there is too much up the air.

well they do have a 360 stand in my local shop but no ps3 one , i was hoping they might get one so i could try it out before i buy .

they launch games are not that great but im a big fan of FPS's and resistance seems like my cup of tea so does motorstorm , i love GOW aswell and have played nealry every 360 game out in the u.k to date and the console is nice but i reckon the ps3 will come out on-top once they learn how to program for it properly (as they say its about 10x harder to program for the ps3 as it is for the 360 lol) and they learn how to maximise the cell processors capability's .

i think ill get a ps3 , then ill have the best of every world , pc , 360 and ps3 so ill never be short on games to play (i hope)

im also looking into getting a small HDTV below 30" (cant fit any bigger in my room) and have a seen a good one for £300 so i might get that soon as this is much better than playing on a 14" DVD combo t.v lol

What monitor do you have? If you have a nice monitor and it happens to be non HDCP you could play HD in it just have to get one of these adapters:

    http://www.x2vga.com/ About $60 + $22 shipping

    and

    http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-2q-49-jp-70-1d2s.html
    about $50 overall

Both are very good and you need component cables for both.

Anyways its a good deal with a monitor 17" and up you can easily play 720p or you can buy an HDCP Monitor and just get a DVI to HDMI Cable...

Cheers for the info chaps. I've since ordered the PS3 complete with HDMI cable and MotorStorm. Joeydoo I'm not interested in why the 360 may be a better purchase, as I said in my original post, I've been there, done that. I can say that the UI and online features of the 360 are outstanding, but it's something I can take or leave.

The price also doesn't bother me, the 360 (premium pack) when new was £279 here in the UK, if you added the wireless box and HD-DVD drive to that you're looking at more than the PS3 is now! So the price argument is pointless.

Regarding the Resistance vs GoW debate, again I'm not bothered. Graphically GoW has the edge but to be fair it is a 2nd generation game. I've only played GoW so I can't comment on gameplay comparisons, but I will say that GoW bored me very quickly, graphics aside it's just another third person shoot 'em up (do not flame my opinion!). Ultimately I'm not interested in this genre (or FPS) on any console, I don't like playing them with a gamepad - mouse and keyboard rules - and PC's do them better, once Crysis is out similar games will fade into insignificance! Anyway that's enough talking about the 360 vs PS3. This is purely about the PS3.

So you chaps that own/have played the PS3, how does MotorStorm actually look and run? I've seen HD trailers and it looks great, especially the shading/lighting effects. Is it merely a graphical showcase or does it have substance? I'm also interested in F1 - I'm a stickler for sim racers - has anyone played it? How does it look/run? Is it hard? I do hope so!
