Hiya, I am currently a student in the UK and am considering living in Japan after University (year 2/3 of my course). Was just wondering how English-Friendly the country is regarding how much Japanese I would need to learn to find my way around okay. Thankies
Like every country you go, if you dont know the language its hard. Im sure you manage. What i would be worried about is food.lol:bigsmile:
I was stationed in Japan for a year about 10 years ago and i gotta say its a great country. I really enjoyed my stay there.
Just don't ask what it is and eat it =) I'm sure you'll be fine, probably find more people speak English than you thought. Just go hang out in the western places and restaurants
I've lived in singapour for 8 years and Shang'hai for 3, so i have some experience living abroad. You will deffinitly meet some other expatriots there, and adapting to the new weather will undoubtable be a hastle. The japanese a great people, there is alot of history there. Im sure youll meet a large number of friends. Plus, you get sweet deals on computer parts
Oh yea, I'm just thinking of the weird stuff like rat and horse, dog etc Hey, I don't mind Sushi, love Wasabi!
learning japanese isn't as hard as you think (i learned japanese through watching too much anime, the only thing is i can't read the writing), but just be careful of those sneaking nerds in the shadows... but what everyone said is true, you'll find the people there nice and you'll probably enjoy your stay.
Im not talking about sushi. Most of it doesnt disgust me that much. But something like sea urchin, and some other weird stuff i saw in Too fast too furious Tokyo drift.
BTW horse meat is sold here in Colombia. My brother ate it once. He said its not that bad. It tastes like normal meat, but it is harder to chew.
I have eaten moose meat, it is basicly like beef but tougher than normal, and really salty. As a result, i liked it alot!
Should be a blast RachaelH, i have always wanted to go to Japan myself, i should think that when you are stuck out there you will pick up the language 'fairly' soon just because you will be forced to learn it by necessity. Well thats how it normally works. On to weird food in this thread- oddest things i ate was when i was a real life Mowgli runnin about in zim with the shona lol....' fried weeza's and mopani worms to name a few hehe wasnt bad actually specially the weeza's. and other bushy things.
The Japanese staples are fish, rice, and beef. Japanese food is similar to Chinese in some respects, but is totally different in most others. Two Fast, Two Furious is not what I'd call a good representation of the country. The Chinese are the ones known for eating more, exotic meats. Rat is considered a delicacy in some parts of China. It's served deep fried. Pidgin is also another common Chinese food that we'd think is gross. For the most part, I think the Chinese eating dogs is mostly a myth. Uncommon but not unknown. I suppose if you're a rice farmer on a commune who makes less than a dollar a day, Fido starts looking mighty tasty after a few months without meat.
