Hi there, I bought a XFX GF 7600GT 256MB 560Mhz clockmemory 1400Mhz clockspeed (ram) 8XAGP 128bit GDDR3. I replaced it for an Asus GF 6600GT 128MB CM 500Mhz CS 900Mhz 8xAGP 128bit GDDR3 With my new 7600GT installed I didn't get that much improvement in some different games as I aspected while it should beat the 6600GT in some higher game settings. There's no major improvement visible only a little and I think that the 256MB on the 7600 is doing the job instead of the higher clockvalue's on the 7600. So I searched for a way to monitor the card's clocks and found rivatuner. Rivatuner shows a clockmemory of 560Mhz wich is correct and a clockspeed of 702 Mhz wich is half the value. When I use coolbit, the OC-tab in the controlpanel shows the standard clockvalue's as they should be (560/1400 Mhz). When using rivatuner with onscreendisplay while playing a game, the value of the clockspeed stays straight at 702Mhz (flatline at 702). So...it didn't feel right. I searched for articles on the internet and found out that a PSU with the right Watt's and Volt's are very important. So I replaced my PSU (400W 12v, 12A) for a new one (650W, 12v, 25A). But I got the same value's. My system is up-to-date, using always the newest drivers for the hardware. Even the BIOS is up to date (incl. an updated AGP driver) Can someone PLZ explain what is going on? Is the 7600GT really running at half speed or does rivatuner calculates it in a different way. You're fine. 702Mhz is 1404Mhz DDR. The memory's clocks speed is doubled, hence the DDR specification = double data rate. So the memory in reality runs at 702Mhz but but is able to transmit data twice per clock cycle. The same was true for your old 6600GT as well. All cards these days use DDR memory.

The Everest app helped me out allright, reliable system information. I still don't get a clue about DDR. Has it to do with DDR2, DDR3? What's the difference between DDR's when running in 3D apps? teh ram is always at 1400mhz (700), only the gpu clocks down/up when you are 2d/3d mode.have you removed teh drivres with driver cleaner and nasty file remover adn than reinstalled new drivers for teh 7600gt?
DDR 1 = 2x DDR 2 = 4x DDR 3 = 8x DDR 4 = 16x it simply means that if a ram chip is ddr 1, it will pump through 2x the data eg 100MHz DDR = 200MHz effective 100MHz DDR2 = 400MHz effective 100MHz DDR3 = 800MHz effective 100MHz DDR4 = 1600MHz effective
Thanks for replying, Yes I've done the removing and installing exactly as you have discribed. But I still get the same clockvalue's in 2D and 3D mode (560/700). I think this is normal 'cause I don't have enabled any OC-feature, yet. So the GPU stays at it's default speeds, I guess. What scares me is that the 7600 doesn't make much difference in it's capabilities with the previous 6600, at this moment.
OK...that's clear to me. Thanks for replying! But how must I place this calculation in my case? The specs of my 7600GT says it has a (G)DDR3 memory (also shown/printed on package). So my thoughts are that the GPU must calculate 8x the Mhz. I feel like I'm asking stupid questions, sorry guys but this is all new to me. It's just I want to know what's going on and I'm very interested how things work. I realy do appriciate anyone's help and the time and effort anyone takes to reply on me. So thanks again!
Totally not correct except for the DDR = double data rate (2x) - the numbers are absolutely not related to the data rate.

No it doesn't. Your memory is fine and running exactly how it is supposed too. It's clocked at 700mhz but it is able to send data twice per clock cycle so it is effectivly running at 1400mhz.
OK, thanks everybody for replying. I'm glad the 7600 is OK with it's clocks and how it handles the data. I believe that thing is now clear to me. What bothers me right now is why the performance of the 7600GT is so poor compared with my previous 6600GT. I mean, the 7600GT should beat 6600GT but there's no major increasement. The only thought I can give at the moment is that it has to do with my MoBo (socket754), maybe it can't handle the power of the 7600 'cause the MoBo is a little out of time and maybe it's not fully compatible with newer next generation graphic cards. i think the 700mhz ddr3 on the vga card is in fact 175 MHz x8 which gives 1.4ghz. i know it sounds weird but how else do you explain it. if 700MHz ddr 3 gives you 1.4GHz effective, then isn't it the exact same thing as ddr1 calculations? i mean how much will ddr 1 at 700MHz give you?
Yep...You have a point here! I think you could be right about this. I think I was to disappointed and carried away by numbers so I didn't see (edit:and didn't know) the logical thing how a the DDR calculates. Maybe I was blinded by the fact that I didn't see the 1400Mhz in real numbers.

7600gt performance!!! johnny-B-good, in regard to you not seeing that much of an increase in games, well it depends on what you are playing. In older games you won't see that much difference, i went from a 128mb 6600gt@600/1200 to my new 7600gt i have now, and in newer games you will see a huge difference. Games like F.E.A.R. and oblivion, COD2,LOTR BFME2, SPA, BF2+BF2142 just to name a few, will run much better on the 7600gt compared to the 6600gt. Due to GF7 tech running more efficiently then the GF6 series, 4 more shader piplines, 2 more vertex processors, twice the memory allowing games to run in high texture quality mode, unlike the 128mb on the 6600gt giving stutters unless you use medium textures on most new games. The DDR3 memory on the 7600gt's are also clocked very high which compensates a lot for the 128bit memory interface they have. Even to the point of being faster then the agp 6800ultra, and the 7600gt's are also beating the stock agp 7800gs's in most benches which is amazing, and these are 256bit cards the 128bit 7600gt is beating. I think the 7600gt's are an awesome card for the price, i just got mine in Oz here for $230 which is real cheap. Just look up some benches johnny, google 6600gt vs 7600gt and you will see what i mean. Examples- Quake4 1600x1200 6600gt- 36.5fps on av. 6800gt- 63.2fps on av. 7800gs- 64.7fps on av. 7600gt- 69.1fps on av. 3Dmark06 1280x1024 6600gt- 1815 6800gt- 2375 7800gs- 2727 7600gt- 2922 Half-Life2 Lost Coast 4xAA 8xAF 1280x1024 6600gt- 14.3fps on av. 6800gt- 38.1fps on av. 7800gs- 42.1fps on av. 7600gt- 43.1fps on av. Notice how the 7600gt beats the 6600gt by almost double the fps, and even beats the 7800gs, a card that costs twice as much here in Oz then the 7600gt, you bought a good card johnny!! Hansel.:smoke:
Thanks Hansel to make feel a lot better with your stats. It's time to believe in the power of my 7600GT, it's time to play! And...Yep is was cheap, €168 (Euro). Have tested my 7600GT with 3DMark05 (demo) @1024, average. Had a score about 5200, no OC (560/1400-(700ddr)). Second benchmark @1024, average went a little above 6000, OC @ 610/1500(750ddr). Both not bad at all, or should I say SUPER. Note: Both benchmarks did run in the 3DMark05 Basis version, so no full tests. Untill now I didn't spend a lot of gaming, more like doing short tests so I didn't get a full impression of my 7600GT. I was spending most of the time on research because of the rare clock readings wich made me feel uncomfortable comparing to the specs of the 7600GT. For a while I thought my card wasn't good enough. But the most important things are now very clear to may, thanks to this great forum. Thanks again, to all of you! Any thoughts are still welcome...
700Mhz DDR1 would give 1400Mhz. But that would never happen because DDR1 maxes out around 250Mhz. In any kind of ddr memory, you double the speed to get the effective rate.
