Can someone in brief say what will be ?
Does Audigy2 6.1 render EAX and 3D effects in Vista ? Or only X-Fi series and in 5 games listed above ?
P.S. Can EAX be provided through the OpenAL (like in Quake 4) in Vista with all effects ?

DirectSound3D and OpenAL are both sound APIs that the programmer uses to create sounds and sound effects on the sound card. DirectSound3D and OpenAL are roughly equivalent in terms of features that they provide the programmer (and thus, the game), I can't think of anything that DS3D has over OpenAL.

Yes. Just like OpenGL, OpenAL supports vendor extensions, like EAX.

And the sad part is how many games have come out recently that are using DirectSound instead of OpenAL, especially when you consider how long developers at least knew about the pending changes to the Windows audio API (not to mention any games yet to come out).

Hopefully anything scheduled to be released between now and the release of Vista were all done using OpenAL.

Stormy Quotes Quote (lol, had to revise post)

    "EAX Support
The Window's implementations of OpenAL support Creative's EAX technology. In fact EAX versions 2, 3, 4 and 5 are all supported! The Generic Software mixer includes a high-quality reverb algorithm too, so you can be guaranteed to always have reverb!"

I get what you are trying to say but, it says "software mixer" there. Which leads me to believe hardware is not used. I'd like to state I'm no expert either, just trying to get the facts as I just bought a friggin x-fi for $70.

maybe they beable to make something like a Direct sound to openAL wrapper or something that convert Directsound data to OpenAL so old games could work.

maybe some one would think about something like that. Like emulation of D3d sound with OpenAL.

Its not a big deal if the only games you have and play are OPenAL.

The big deal will be to those who have a large collection of D3DSound/EAX titles but very few OpenAL titles (I only have 2) and who arent too keen on dual booting.

But as I dont mind dual booting XP/Vista its no biggie for me.

    Quake4 and Doom3.

Btw, to all those with X-fi and Audigy, you lost nothing out of this, MS didnt make your cards obsolete or anything, your cards are still good on Vista and XP with ALL games for now and the forseeable future.

For x-fi soundcards it will give a ALchemy wrapper from CL, which transfers EAX calls to OpenAL. That means that all DS3D EAX games will play with hardware EAX on a X-FI in Vista.
