I have a X-Fi and Sennheiser HD515 headphones, and was wondering if anyone could fill me in on how to best set up the game console settings (cmss, speaker settings etc) for headphone gaming...

Post your settings here, also EQ settings if you found real good values to set the EQ to... Thanks.

AS you see most of it is both trial and error aswell as personal preference. So you can try other settings and see if you like them and use them as building blocks for your own settings. I would suggest you experiment with your settings so you understand which settings do which this why you can build your settings based on your own preferences of sound. Hope that helps. Maybe some other will post their basic settings for you...

hm... it's just that most people seem to like the headphone setting in the "speaker" tab, and I don't... I have the crystalizer set to 100% as well... Would be nice to see what settings different people use...

ah, so you see it's whatever you prefer? Sound is very subjective, I knwo it would be nice to see some starting points but atleast you can figure out what you like instead of having settings that your supposed to like.....good luck

Thanks... But I'd still like to see some settings others use so that I could try them out and maybe I'd find something that I'd like more than what I'm using atm...

Make a new thread "How do you set your X-fi for Headphones?" Possibly you'll get more responses. I want to help but don't use a X-fi... It's worth a try.

I use headphones to play games (especially in night-time).
Honestly, I never adjusted settings for headphones. I have CreativeLabs' X-Fi ExtremeMusic sound card, I use settings for 5.1 speakers, and connect my headphones to a jack.
    Maybe I am an audio-pervert ? :)
I would try new settings for headphones then, and post some results.

Actually based on what I have heard the CMSS3D for headphones is reported to be very good for simulated surround sound over headphones. You may want to check that out if you play games using stereo headphones all the time.

Turn off synchronize with control panel.

Set 7.1 speakers in windows control panel.

    Reboot

Switch to headphones in CL game mode.

Turn CMSS HPH on, and both filters to ON (I've found they aren't working if they are switched to auto)

Turn Crystalizer and EQ off if you want to get clearest sound possible. Crystalizer is useful on games with crappy sound files (22050 Hz i.e..)

    ----------------------

    Advantages over surround speakers:

    - Wider sound stage (despite it being simulated)
    - More exact sound positioning
    - You can hear enemies above or below you (try BF2 or Operation Flashpoint at last)

Listen to it the way Sennheiser made it to be heard...

Audio Creation Mode - Bit matched playback 44.1 Khz- 2.1 Speaker setting.

No EQ, no CMSS and no crystallizer crap.

@Fruit if your trying to get Bit-matched playback with no resampling then did you now that the X-fi DSP STILL resamples? Actually 70%, YES! 70% of the power of that DSP is used for SRC....Just for information.

Yeah of course the soundcard still has to resample to some degree. But this is the closest you can get unles you want to go purchase an external DAC.

I figured you knew that I was just mentioning it. I am done with the Creative soundcards. I say for headphones you just have to test different settings. The mani thing is to get the sound out of your head. This causes listeners fatigue.

You have to set windows CP at 7.1 speakers and then turn CL game mode to headphone.

See, this makes games think they are connected to 7.1 stuff, and X-Fi then applies all algorithms to all those channels and down mixes all the stuff to 2 channels.

Using headphones with X-Fi without CMSS (while playing games or listening to 5.1 music) is pure nonsense.
