the price difference for me is 70€ and since i do not intend on using these cards too long ( will upgrade again with dx10 and stuff ), i want to know which of the 2 is the better buy, the x1800xt is good, but will the performance be much worse with a x1800gto?
or should i just go for that one?

    i forgot to mention it concerns a 256mb x1800xt

well i mean the x1800xt is a great card and will give you great performance but the x1800gto is also good for its price but i would go with the x1800xt because its still gonna be awhile till dx10 and vista come out.gto performance wont be much worse but i still reccomend the XT

X1800XT. GTO is substantially gimped in comparison. Trust me you will regret not getting an XT.

Edit: Either that or get a GTO plus another stick of ram. No point having awesome graphical capabilities without any room for system storage....

256mb or 512mb, the X1800XT will kick the living daylight out of an X1800GTO. :)

EDIT: (Off-topic) Can anyone here inform me, can I run an X1900 on the second 16x PCI-e slot of my motherboard ? Or can I only run it in the upper one...?

 O-oh, because I have this huge zalman chipset cooler right under the first pci-e slot, so a double-slot cooling solurion (like the one on the XT) will not fit there, so I have two options:

    1) Replace the chipset cooler for something smaller :)()
    2) Insert the X1900 into the second pci-e slot :))?)

Bad news: I just read from some website that in single card mode, my A8n-SLI Deluxe's first pci-e slot is 16x but the second is.... only 1x !!! :bawl:

This means in practice that I have to buy a new chipset cooler that does not come "out" of the motherboard as much. (So its height should be 13mm or less, when the Zalman I have is at least 30....)

I may have already found a good heatsink though (luckily), so I might just purchase that and hope it's sufficient to cool my chipset. I think I might mod my case so that the case's side panel which you can take off will have a 120mm case fan drilled onto the inner side of it, so it'll blow directly onto my chipset thus cooling it better than the lone heatsink. What do you guys think (and sorry for being off-topic, I just have to get this sorted out, I hope you understand)

UPDATE!: I just bought a chipset HSF made out of copper. It has a small (probably loud) fan in the middle and it should fit perfectly onto my motherboard. It also came with this cord which has a 4-pin end and the other end connects to the cable of the fan. Is this 4-pin end the one that connects to the PSU ? (Sorry for being a noob)

If you game at resloutions 16x12 and above, then get the x1800 XT 512mb, if its for 1280x1024 and below, then get the 256mb, as at 1280x1024 the 512mb is only about 5fps faster. :)

Get the X1800XT; 512mb or not, you'll be pleased, I'm sure of it. :)

He's talking about system ram, not the 512 version of the 1800...anyways, I say get the XT AND the ram...don't consider it the same purchase...512 of ram is dirt cheap nowadays, don't let that factor into you buying a vid card.

The 1800xt 256 version is awesome dude...I'm playing games at 1280x1024 with all options maxxed and I don't get any hiccups. All my games look and play great now, even Oblivion.

edit - oh but DEFINETLY upgrade your ram, 512 is just not enough anymore, you'll notice the difference.

1800 is old technology, buy 1900 or just wait for DX10 models

    my question was about a 256mb x1800xt or a x1800gto, if i wanted something higher would get a 7900gt or a x1900gt.

and i dunno, the x1800xt is already gonna cost me 270€+50€ on ram= 320€
i dunno if i can spend that much, while if i get a x1800gto+ram its only 250€.

i REALLY wanna get the xt, i know how it performs and stuff, i just want to know if the x1800gto is that much worse, or if the upgrade from a x700pro>x1800gto is worth it.

    These might help:

Personally I think X1800GTO and ram, however it is a difficult decision given the impending arrival of Conroe (thus DDR2 memory needs).

Possibly just get a GTO now, and pinch pennies for awhile. Save up for D3D10 and then go "badboy" VGA and 2 gigs of decent memory. Take into account that this time next year you will be needing to purchase Vista for D3D10, so maybe a more substantial rebuild is in order for you.

If you do go XT or GTO+ram, you wil be out just as much again (plus lots more actually) when Vista hits, so think about this for awhile.

yeah i had it thought out already, i just really need this card for the time being, cause oblivion runs like poop on my current system :p,
when vista and dx10 come i will do a total rebuild and leave this pc as it is and give it to my mom or something lol :p
    rebuild:
    cpu: conroe
    vga: ati dx10
    ram: 2gb
    hdd: 320gb
    sound: X-FI

but thanks for the input and ill read those reviews.

the 1900GT is not a higher rated card than the 1800XT. the XT is a beast, i have the 512meg version and it clocks 750 / 900 on stock cooler.

i took my x1800GTO back after a week and was able to get an upgrade to the XT and am glad i did. the GTO is quick but it suffers when you crank up the detail.
