    Hi

To get the best performance out of CounterStrike: Source you should force
Direct X 8.1 shaders instead of Direct X 9 shaders. This is because the FX
series cards have performance problems running DX 9 shaders.
You should check the console variable mat_dxlevel to see what shaders
you are using. If it is 90, you should put this into autoexec.cfg located in

    \<YOUR_HL2_FOLDER>\cstrike\cfg.

    cl_showfps 2
    mat_dxlevel 81
    mat_clipz 1
    mat_show_texture_memory_usage 1
    ai_disable 0
    ai_norebuildgraph 1
    cl_forcepreload 1
    sv_forcepreload 1
    cl_ragdoll_collide 1
    sv_footsteps 1
    violence_ablood 1
    violence_agibs 1
    violence_hblood 1
    violence_hgibs 1
    cl_ejectbrass 1
    cl_show_bloodspray 1
    cl_show_splashes 1
    crosshair 1
    mat_bloom 1
    mat_bumpmap 1
    mat_diffuse 1
    mat_drawwater 1
    mat_fastnobump 0
    mat_filterlightmaps 1
    mat_filtertextures 1
    mat_fullbright 0
    mat_hsv 0
    mat_mipmaptextures 1
    mat_showlowresimage 0
    mat_softwarelighting 0
    mat_softwareskin 0
    mat_specular 1
    mat_compressedtextures 1
    muzzleflash_light 1
    r_drawdecals 1
    r_drawflecks 1
    r_drawmodeldecals 1
    r_drawparticles 1
    r_DrawRain 1
    r_drawropes 1
    r_drawskybox 1
    r_drawtranslucentrenderables 1
    r_dynamic 1
    r_WaterDrawReflection 1
    r_WaterDrawRefraction 1
    r_fastzreject 1
    r_lod 0
    cl_smooth 0
    lod_Enable 1
    sv_robust_explosions 1
    r_waterforceexpensive 1

If you have no "autoexec.cfg" file in the specificed folder, just create this
text-file with the editor of your choice and just copy-paste these into it.

To answer your question regarding the drivers, I quess you should try 83.90
as it seems to have certain optimizations also for the Source engine, but
I don`t know for sure if this also applies to FX-series cards.

Anyway, forcing DX 8.1 shaders on FX cards always gives a huge FPS boost,
and in Counter-Strike: Source you will probably not notice any difference in
Image-Quality. It will look the same also if you are using DX 8.1 shaders.

OK, wasn`t sure if Source engines always default to DX 8.1 if FX is detected.

From what I remember, when I had my 5900 card I`ve been using the drivers
65.73 for best performance in Half-Life 2. Maybe you should try that one also.

I should default to DX8.1 upon detection of the FX Generation of cards..
It did when I last installed Half-Life 2
