for starters you will need to run in DX7 mode NOT DX9. try 1024x768 0AA 8xAF max settings, and go from there ...

oh and try the 81.89 officials

    Why on DX7 mode? a 6800NU can handle COD2 at 1024x768 in DX9

i have a 6800 "Ultra", and it can't handle DX9 very well. to many dips into the 20's ... even with my 7800 i have to play at 1024x768 in DX9 if i want to stay above 40 fps .. very demanding game in DX9 ;)

if u want to run that in multiplayer u will have to expect to scail ur card down to using dx 7 mode even at dx 9 mode i play 2 aa and 4 af max detail but even that can drop fps alot usally around 40-60 so with a 6800 ultra u could be expecting much lower

For CoD is there a big difference in visuals dropping from DX9 to DX7?

yes, there is a huge visual difference between the two.

There are more special effects, like muzzle glow, sun glare, shadows, and dynamic lighting..

all these add up to a HIGHLY taxing game on a video card.

btw, to the starter of this thread, when i had my NU, i ran everything on high on dx7 and had a constant FPS over 100, lowest was mid 70's.

    1024x768
    4xAA
    8xAF
    Soften shadows- everything
    etc etc...

if drops into 20's are fine, than yeah, right... U need at least a 7800gt (maybe 7800gs) to be able to play the game well in dx9. Even I get drops to 30's and I even have a few (like 2) things not set to maximum...

multiplayer or single player ? in single player it runs a little better, but imho if i get anything less than 40 fps it's not acceptable, which happens in DX9 *a lot* thus i play it in DX7 with my 6800 Ultra. frame rates of high to mid thirties isn't good enough for MP imo.

I dont have the game, so i can't tell how it runs on my machine. About my friend.. i was there when he instaled the game, 1024x768, DX9, no change on the other settings. I saw him playing and i didn't notice big slowdowns, the game was running fine, even on a lan with some other friends. And trust me, he's a very picky guy eheh. It's a Venice 3500+ @2600mhz, 1GB DDR and a 6800GS @500/1250
