Hey guys I was wondering if anyone knew if the Arctic cooling NV5 rev. 3 will fit on my 7800GT extreme edition from XFX. I read somewhere that the support bar on the card makes installation impossible without serious modification. After reading that I also saw here:

    http://www.pcmoddingmy.com/content.php?review.313.3

The only concern is that the support bar appears to be large than in the pictures of that XFX card.

Anyone know for sure? If so, does the silencer NV5 make much of a difference between the copper stock heatsink on the Extreme 7800GT?

Well I have that model on my XFX 7800GTX, and the anti-warp bar doesn't get in the way. You can always remove that metal bar if you need to. Just un-screw the screws.

The big question is will it fit? I really just need to know if the standard XFX 7800GT has the same size support bar as the neon Extreme Gamer edition.

It doesn't matter man, you can remove the bar.

    Get whatever is cheaper, lol.

    Hey man!
What temp. do you have with rev.3?
I have to decide between Zalman-700Cu and Silencer rev.3 :frown:
    What do you suggest?

Well Cole, I've had 2 Arctic Cooling Silencers now, one for my older 6800GT and now one for my 7800GTX.

    They both worked fabulously.

At stock factory overclocks (450/1250), w/NV5 rev.3, temps are:
    Idle - 42C
Load- 69C (69 is the maximum I've ever seen it go)

Hmmm this temp. is a little high...
I have tested zalman 700Cu on my GTX (490/1350) and temp. was...
    Idle:39C
    Load:65C Max

    On stock cooler...
    Idle:52C
    Load:80C Max :micro:

Wow, my stock cooler was 10x worse than yours, thats why I think my temps are a bit too high to start with. With the stock cooler @ standard 450/1250 clocks, idle was 57C and load was 88C.

My Arctic Cooling NV5 is working well, but video card temps should be under 50C at load really, similar to a AMD CPU. They are both made of similar chemicals and silicon really :)

I got my Swiftech MCW55 today (1/9/06), my Swiftech Kit should be arriving tomorrow (1/10/06), according to UPS.

Whoops, I didn't see that you posted that right before I posted mine.

That is good news, but also bad. My 7800GT Idles at ~38*C in a 90*F case. and rarely goes above 60*C. I was hoping for some major difference but it looks like it won't be a whole lot better than my stock copper heatsink, might lower case temps a bit while gaming but nothing major.:frown:

My temps went through the roof when I installed my old Zalman vf700Cu from my old 6800GT compared to the stock heatsink.

Well in your case it doesn't look like it would help much.

In my case, XFX applied the thermal compound wrong so that only the voltage transistors AROUND the GPU core had compoound on them, there was absolutely nothing on the core.

Sad really, last time I buy an XFX card.

If you want better temps Dethred, I suggest going water.

I think I might get it and just send it back if it doesn't help much. It might be worth the money just to get that heat out of the case. That review of the card I used for picture examples seems to show it cooling the card a bit. I opened my case to simulate crappy case ventilation and it idled at 46*C. Aksi that review showed it never going above ~63*C with the memory over 1.2ghz, which mine won't even hit.

i was thinking of buying an AC silencer for my gt too . at stock speeds 450/1050 it idles at 48C and loads at 74 and even more . i get a maximum oc of 492/1170 without voltmod . what i'm asking is what temperatures should i expect with an NV5 rev 3 and how much will i be able to oc . and another thing , should i change the fan speed of the card from rivatuner ? default of performance 3d is 43 , can i make it 60-70 , could it affect something ?
    thank you . :)

I think you should wait for new AC cooler

AC launched 3rd generation VGA Silencer name Accelero X1 (6800/7800 series) and Accelero X2 (X1800/X1900)

The review of Accelero X2 on X1800XT Vs ATI super hair dryer stock cooler has posted
    http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Articles&go=read&arc_id=63

Some other reviewer is testing Accelero X1 at this moment

    http://www.virtual-hideout.net/cgi-bin/newspro/viewnews.cgi?newsall

Also, Wild said that he is also doing the test of Accelero X1 on 7800GTX card.
So, You can wait for Wild's test result and make the decision later.

Sli temp of top card and nv silencer 5 rev 3
    Before idle 45, load 65
    After idle 38, load<60

I had to mod the bios to get 100% fan speed from the cards, stock fan speed in 3d/2d was 43%, this helped a lot

    Motherboard and cpu temps(250x11, 1.52v,ram at 250 1t, and htt @4x)
MB 40, after 30, cpu 38, after 33. These temps at idle

Can't say that the overclock increased, but at max overclocks, it is way more stable.
