Hello all. I am upgrading my computer and was wondering if you thought my Antec Trupower 430W PSU was strong enough for this upgrade? Amd Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego (upgrading from an AthlonXP 3200+) ASUS A8N-SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail (upgrading from MSI K7N2) 1 Evga 7800GT 256mb (upgrading from ATI 9800XT 256mb) will obviously need new PSU when I go SLI WD Raptor 74GB - from current comp 1.5 GB corsair XMS - from current comp SB Audigy 2 ZS - from current comp Plextor DVD-RW drive - from current comp Antec Trupower 430W PSU -from current comp Do you think the 430W will be able to handle this ok?
I think that it might work but I would just get a newer more powerful PSU right away so you dont have to worry about it.
well I use this utility http://www.overclockersclub.com/link/?http://extreme.outervision.com/index.jsp it says my whole system only takes 292W. I figure thats cause i have only 1 hard drive and dvd rw drive. Hey I looked at my antec manual and it says my PSU has an output of : +12v 26A, +3.3v 28A, and +5v 36A. how does that sound?
Yeah, a 430 watt PSU will surely be good enough, until of course, you go SLI! Then you'll need about 500 watts or more. A lot of people have 520 Watt ones, so go with one of them when you're ready for SLI. But for just one 7800 GT, you'll be totally fine.
Hey that's a good link to calculate how much power my PC is using, I've been looking for something like that. Thanks, lol.
hehe np. Uh oh, I was reading the review on newegg.com and some(but not all) were having trouble lockups if they had less than 450W PSU :frown:
Ah but yes thats a consumer/user review, not a hardware review. There's no telling how those people have their systems setup, and whether they are setup properly or not. Go research some hardware reviews on the 7800GT, see what the power consumption is on max load.
At stock the Athlon 64s aren't even meant to consume 100 watts. The card itself should be less than 100, and given those are definately the two big ones I don't see how you would have a problem. Remember just because >400 watt power supplies exist does not mean they are common.
Yup, should work just fine. If it were a generic, it might be different, but an antec truepower sound be great.
Hey I got another question... on the newegg.com site it says my mobo needs a 24 pin power cable. My Antec 430W is a 20 pin. Does that mean my PSU wont work with the mobo?
Just get a 20 to 24 pin adapter http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812201001 There you go
