if you look at benchmarks, the 6800gs in sli still beats the 7800gt so i dont know what micketh is talking about. but the 7800gt does have some nifty technologies like better looking chain link fences and stuff. basically what you want, youve been dealt the knowledge, now its time to make a choice. and with evga, hopefully you can step up to a 7800gt for like 100 bucks

nope, if only dreams could come true! :D with the new forceware 8x.xx drivers, you can mix and match two 6800gs's from different companies but not two different cards, unfortunately.

They'd have to redesign the whole SLI technology for that to work.

Otherwise you'd be getting some VERY weird graphics.

With 2x 6800GS in SLi (425Mhz core and 1100Mhz memory) you could manage maximum settings (along with 2GB RAM), 4xAA and 16xAF at 1280x1024 res. At a playable FPS.
With the XXX versions you could probably manage to add V Sync. I've also seen 6800GS's get to around 525MHz core.

I really dont understand why youd go for GS sli, in the UK a 6800GS is around £160x2 = £320 You could get a 7800GTX for that if you know where to look, and a 7800GT can be picked up for as little as £210 thats £110 less than a 6800GS sli and I know for a fact that the 6800GS sli is not 50% faster than a 7800GT, i firmly believe that a 7800GT is as fast as 2 6800GS.

hmm i agree cuz i was in a simular position expect i did not own a 6800 gs but the bottom line is a 7800 gt can out do 2 x 6800 gs in sli in games especially when res and extra stuff is turnt on. Also these cards use newer technology plus u will have the power of those 2 cards in a 1 slot solution meaning u can upgraded to another 7800 gt or GTX later.

and it is actually cheaper than getting 2x 6800 GS

yes i think you are right but the 3dmark05 score from a 7800 gt is +- 8000
and the sli 6800 gs is +- 10000.. but one 7800 gt is much cheaper
and you can always upgrade later to sli.. and its just wath i say before.. in the future games will work better with the new genaration cards

everybody knows 3dmark is just a farce, cheap marketing a good example of this is the x1600xt..

reading the guru3d review of that card wasinteresting to find that a 6800GS murderd it throughout including 3dmark03 but for some reason the x1600 managed to beat the 6800GS and match the 6800GT in 3dmark05.

Benchmarks are pointless to try and use them to measure the speed of your card which is a shame really.

game benchmarks, reviews and general reputations, lots of things determine the use of a card for example somebody who just plays doom 3 everyday would be better off with a 6800GT than a x800xt, and smebody who just oplays half life 2 wouldbe better off with the x800xt, its jst personal preference and If you do some research you tend to find good reliable reviews which use real game benchmarks with custom time demos which means that the companys cannot optimise for them to tip the balance into ther favour to get you to buy ther product.

I just tend to look at the specs of the card and fgure it out from ther. DOnt egt me wrong benchmarking is fun and very addictive. Buti just dont trust it as a solid indication as to the speed of a card (meaning 3dmarks)

hmm yes you have a piont over here.. but i think you can compare a 6800 gt and a 6800 ultra with benchmarking.. but not a 6800 ultra with a x850 xt or something like that.. and its good to see what overclocking does..

The best way in my oppinion to measaure graphics card performance by is by playing games.

Benchmarks are one thing but actually gaming is a different situation. Benchmarks are not accurate enough in simulating true gaming performance i think most of the anomilies that appear is in benchmarks.

Don't get me wrong a benchmark in some cases can be used as an indicator on how ur card performs or should perform i.e good for troubleshooting, but in general it is just not accurate enough.

I mean it no good you have a card that owns in benchmarks but does not perform no where near wot u expect it to in real life games, cuz at the end of the day we buy these card to game with not "play" a benchmark.

Also Benchmarks get out of date pretty quick like for example when you see an older graphics card or a graphics card using older technology outperforms a new graphics card in an older game
