Well I guess I lucked-out. RT does slow down my pair of BFG 7800 GTs. (ASUS A8N32) I have no idea why. I'm using the same graphics driver as you all. Only difference is that this mobo has a slightly different chipset (dual 16X lanes in SLI) and a NB & SB just like in the good 'ole pre AMD-64 days. My chipset driver is different than yours.

The bad news is that they still sound like a pair of banshees at 25% and I don't want to mess with turning them down even more with the command line options.

I had some good cooling results with a Zalman heat pipe silent cooler (even with modest overclocking) on my ATI 9800 so I may go that route again...but I need to burn these cards in and tweak them for a while before I do that.

Some of users having 7800GT fan control problem report that the ForceWare driver refuses to control their fan _only_ after cold boot and it suddenly starts working after some time. Looking at these symptoms, I can suspect that driver uses some incorrectly programmed thermal checking, which blocks fan control when temperature is out of range.

You don't have to mess with command line to do that. You can easily shift minimum available fan speed on the sliders:

I have a feeling there might be 2 different cards here. When I can I will
photograph mine to compare with the rest to see if the power connector
    is in the same place.

Sorry, Unwinder for going on, but I wasn't quite understanding what was going on.

this is ridiculous. this guy has been begging for info and after 23 posts in this thread the only thing i have seen as a solution is:
and then the rest of you are just arguing that he shouldn't have bought the card in the first place which is even less helpful. at least Unwinder offered some info. that's pretty crummy advice to offer the guy...

one possible solution: solder a VR in between the hot lead and the fan. disable fan control and throttling in rivatuner/coolbits or whatnot (so the lesser fanspeeds do not force your card to a lower perf level) and adjust the VR as necessary. for right now that's the only solution i can see. a 1k VR should suffice. it's quick and dirty but an easy mod like that is unlikely to void warranty and it only takes a few minutes with a soldering iron.

    HTH mate.

Well I've got the older Heatsink/fan of the 7800GT OC, so i'm not sure if I'm getting the same noise level that EdwardAndo claims to be getting. All I know once in a while usually when I install new drivers the card will increase noise level while booting and slow down during Desktop mode... and when playing in 3D mode it stays the same speed for some reason :S.

So it pretty quiet on my side, only advice i'd give you is getting a new cooler for your VGA.

Well, since I quite experienced with successfully controlling my 7800GT's fan using RT 15.8 and *do* have the cold-start issue I will try to come up with some ideas.

    @Edward:

First make sure that you really cannot control the fan, by sliding all three mode sliders (2D and both 3D sliders). Maybe your card is stuck in 3D mode.

If that does not change anything install "Coolbits 2" (you can download it here at Guru3D). Then go to the Nvidia driver-panel and go to the clock-settings tab. There is an option that tells the fan to "always run" (I use a german driver, so I don't know the exact name). It should not be set, but even if it's unset you should try to set the option, reboot, then unset it again and reboot again. Maybe your driver is stuck with that option.

If that does not work try to uninstall the driver and use "Driver Cleaner" after that (also clean the CAB file using driver cleaner). Then install the drivers anew. The windows default driver can't control the fan, but usually as soon the drivers are installed (even without reboot) the fan slows down for me.

If all these things don't work use Atitool and have it run for about 5 minutes in "scan for artefacts" mode, this will get your card going. After that close Atitool and give the card about a minute to turn cool down and back to 2D mode. Maybe try a reboot after that.

If all these measures didn't work try to uninstall the card (take it out of the slot) and install it again. If you got a SLI system try the other PCI-express slot.

Finally if you're still stuck at 100% fanspeed you should either RMA your card or consider buying a Zalman VF700 or Silencer 5 Rev. 3 (though the silencer now uses the card's fan-controller, which isn't a real solution for you).

I don't know how reliable my way of working is, but I took a dump of my BIOS (BFG 7800GTX) with ATITool and opened it in Nibitor. In the temperature tab, there's 100% next to 3D, Throttling and 2D Mode...

When i leave my case open, my card idles @ 32°. An amazing temperature, but the price I pay......

31°C is the _lowest_ temperature, that can be measured by GPU's on-die thermal diode. Even if T is lower, it will still read 31. That's pretty good reason to think about thermal checking related problems in the driver.

I have the same problem with my 7800GT and am pretty dismayed that no solution has been found. It really seems like a driver issue since the fans are not controllable with the tuner program.

Has anyone tried flashing the BIOS to an Nvidia reference card one?

Hi... Just to add my bit to the party
ive got a Inno3d 7800GT.. and had the same fan problem being on full whack
it slowed down on first reboot after installing the forcewares for the first time, but then went back to full power on next reboot and not been able to slow down since...
i installed the 77.77 drivers from the cd to no effect from rivatuner either..

then i installed coolbits2 as reccomended by one of these posts (thanks tm101)
reboot and low and behold fan has throttled right back :dave:

im just about to re-install the latest 81.95series forceware to see if i still have fan control
*edit* all seems well so far with latest forceware... will see how it is after a couple of reboots

edit 2: after some gaming, the fan has sped up... now will not slow down again :(

Hi…As I'm heading toward buying that GT , The fan noise will spoil that fun and the happiness that card will bring to me So I will be glad to get this matter solved.

1- It looks like not all the GT have this issue and As I'm considering the EVGA, or the XFX ( I love their new black version) and divided between this and the GT CO. any suggestions much appreciated.

2- I feel what is like to have a hair dryer inside the Case its ugly ,really ugly,
As with my current MSI 6600GT I live for continuous 6 months with loud fan and then came RivaTuner ,and make the wonders.
NOW : I did used NiBiTor bios editor to left up the memory stock speed , and
Flashed it with the revised bios .what I did not notice back then that there was an option that let you set the speed of the fan in 2D mode ..hell , I did noticed it lately and I was not happy to know that I could get it really quieter much before.
As U guys already have that GT try the following :
    - Download the latest NiBiTor .
    - Download nvflash ,make dos boot disk and save your current VGA bios with the command : nvflash.exe -b backup.rom to the floppy.
    - Mode a copy of that bios with the NiBiTor and set the 2D mode to 80 % or less.

    - Flash the GT with the revised bios: nvflash -p -u –f -6

I know there is the warranty thing but I will not accept that level of sound at all.
And I can reflash in case of something happened.
Keep Us Updated and have a nice quite day.

If the noise is still bugging you get an Arctic NV5 rev3 cooler. Then the fan can spin at 100% all day with nary a whisper. I had the fan on a 6800 spinning at 100% and it was louder than my X850XT under load. I put on an NV5 and it is so quiet now. I am now putting Arctic coolers on my X850XT and my 7800GT. You can also consider the Zalman VF-700 but it does not exhaust outside the case.

I dumped the BFG and bought an eVGA 7800GT. It performs better and is a helluva lot quieter.

Get the eVGA version. You won't be disappointed.

and in my case, the 7800gt was $349. changing this to any other brand is gonna up the price to over $429 for a different 7800gt card.

    is this a intermittant issue?
I have the BBFG7800gt SLI. I could've sworn that when I had it single card the fan would spin down. I had my computer like this for a few hours so I dunno if it was intermittant at that time. but it was working.
Now I stuck in the second card and both are stuck at 100%fan volume even when I'm in windows doing nothing.
Also I can tell its 100% only because its the same speed when I first turn on the computer. I believe the card is 100% fan when comp uter is first turned on. it doesnt throttle down.

Anybody have an update to this yet?

And can someone show me how to use rivatuner to slow my fans down?
