Ok guys, my current pc specs are:

    Athlon64 3000+ winchester @ 2358mhz
    1gb kingston 3200 RAM in dual @ 434.92mhz
    Gigabyte Geforce 6600gt agp @ 585/1125
    Abit AV8 s939 mobo
    Hitachi 80gb hdd
    3dmark03 ------- 9803

Now, I want to upgrade my pc, but am not entirely sure which way to go. I might have enough money at christmas to go for a total upgrade to the pci-e platform (DFi Lanparty Ultra-D and BFG7800gt). It's a lot of money, tho :

    DFi Lanparty Ultra-D ---- £95
    BFG7800gt -------------- £234

I've been considering the following upgrade, too:

    Some solid Abit pci-e mobo ------- £70
    6800gt(gs) ----------------------- £195(£170)

The second option is about £75 cheaper and would still give me a reasonable boost, at least I hope so. It would also be a lot more future-proof, than my current agp pc. Or shall I just stick with agp and get the agp version of gt/gs and wait for the new amd socket (M2) to arrive???

I'd love to upgrade to 7800gt, coz that would just be sweet, but is the extra money spent over the 6800gt worth it???

Please guys, What would u do in my situation? Taking in regard, that I haven't money in bucketloads...

    Cheers

id either go all out for the 7800gt or just get agp 6800gs.

I'd say the 7800GT is worth it if you are going to be playing all the latest games, but if you still want reasonable fps in the latest games while saving money i'd say go for the 6800GT/GS :)

I would go for a good AGP card and wait for the next generation of cards before doing a big upgrade.

I agree, you shouldn't see much of a performance difference, and it's much more worth it considering how much £ you save. :)

hm, yep, but the agp version of 6800gt is about £240 over here, which is more than the pcie 7800gt costs... so going for 6800gt agp would be 240-80 (from selling my 6600gt) which is £160. Now going for a big upgrade would be 235+95-80-40 (gpu and mobo) which comes to £210... Question is, is that £50 money well spent???

Another place to check out in the UK is www.novatech.co.uk

They are pretty quick, and the prices aren't bad

Don't go 7 Series just yet. How many models are there? And how much are they? Wait a bit longer ;-)

Looking at those prices, I would say get a PCI Express motherboard and buy that BFG 7800GT, it makes more sense to do that IMO.

:D agreed, save you money and do a real upgrade, the other way your still stuck in agp and limited to a 6800gt/gs. Just like me!!!

Well, I've found that ebuyer are in fact more expensive for quite a lot of stuff, scan are quite good as well. ;)

Yeah, that 6800gt agp is really cheap, but also has been out of stock for quite some time...

I searched all the sites (scan, overclockers, overclock, dabs, novatech, ebayer, idealcomputing, komplett) and it seems to me, that if I was lucky to find a 6800gt agp, it would cost me more than a 7800gt. Sure I'll have to splash out on a pcie board (dfi £95), but I still think it's a better and a more future-proof option...

Anyone agrees??? or are there any new gpu or cpu standards around the corner? Coz I don't want to go pcie just to find out, that next year will have new gpu slots or cpu sockets...

I'd check into how long you'd have to wait for 6800GS to be released - pretty much same spec as a GT, I understand.

Unless it's another spoof like that Diamond ATI website that showed an AGP X1800.
