Hi, I have the Dfi Ultra-d with a Venice and 2x 512 G.skill GH sticks. My ram does 260mhz 1.5-2-2-5 1t 24/7 I have ordered an Opteron 146 becouse for its nice overclockability an for its 1mb L2 cache that i will be neading when upgrading to 2gb of ram. My cuestions are: 1. Will 4x 512 run in 2x dualchannel? 2. If 4x 512 wont do dual channel would 2x 1gb, in dual ch, be faster? Kaeping in mind that the 512's will overclock better.. 3. Will 4x 512mb sticks overclock as good as 2 sticks? I know that i can go as fast as the slowest stick but are ther any known isseus that prove not to run 4 stick together? Any opinions welcome becouse i dont have a clue..
Your chances of OC'ng 4x512 r next to none, or at least very very slim. Cause 4 sticks = 4x the voltage needed for each stick and it's harder for the memory controller to sync them too. Your are better off trying with 2x1gig.
Will I be able to keep my cpu overclocked with 4x512? I guess so if I change the divider or something...
I never asqed that. But thanks anyway.. I mean arent there any 1gb Tccd or Utt sticks known? Has anyone a link to a list or something?
Yeah: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=67762 1 GB just doesn't overclock as well as 512 MB. Crucial Ballistix PC4000 appears to be the best, and Samsung UCCC are definately second best. I'm not sure that 4x 512 MB is so problematic.... Anandtech motherboard reviews do memory stress tests with 4x sticks, and the FSB seems to be just as high, or nearly so. The only real difference should be 2T command rate, maybe slightly worse timings besides. Ideally 2x 1 GB for 1T command rate, since its good for 3-5% performance. But the problem for you is that you'd give up your high-voltage timings this way, and there aren't any 1 GB winbond that I've heard of. So perhaps you might be the same or better just getting two more, and you'd certainly probably save money.
Oh wait, nevermind on the Anandtech thing, they only do stocks speeds with the memory stress test: http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2337&p=5
Thanks for the reply G L. I guess i'll have to wait just a litle more until something better comes out. Seems like the ballistix hitting 300mhz is rather rare than cummon.. In this upgrade i want some ram that is going tho hit the 300mhz for sure sins it going to be in my sysem for quite a wile.
I'd still go for Crucial Ballistix...despite them not working with my dfi mobo - hehe! I still regret the passing of those tracers...*sighs wistfully*
