I recently upgraded from my old GeForce FX 5600 256MB, I found a nice deal on a ATi 9800XT 256MB and looked it up and it seemed much better than my GeForce. Plus, I got some hands-on with a 9800 Pro which my friend had and it was really nice. But it's weird becasue the 9800XT seems exactly the same as my FX 5600. I mean the FPS are exactly the same in GTA:SA. It just doesn't seem to be performing well. Did I make a bad choice? Or was my FX 5600 pretty decent? System Specs: Windows XP Pro (Tweak & What Not) MSI KT400 Mobo / VIA Chipset (Latest Drivers for everything) ATi 9800XT 256mb 1.25gHz of PC2700 DDR Memory AMD Anthlon XP 2200+ (I think it's like 1.8gHz) 250GB Maxtor HD 8MB Buffer 500watt Power Supply Any ideas would be appreciated.
im pretty sure its your cpu and uh, you dont have 1,25 ghz of memory plus, im pretty sure that mobo is only agp 4x, if that would actually make a difference
that CPU is fine, that wouldnt slow down an 98XT neither would 4x AGP, what other games you playing? what resoloution do you have your games running at, Also turn off the frame limiter in GTA:SA its in the video menu, now crank all the settings up and enjoy.
There is no bottleneck with a 9800XT in his system. If there is, it will only be small and nothing to worry about. Did u uninstall the Nv card properly, and use driver cleaner before installing the ATI card? Also, as said above, take off frame limiter in GTA. Finally, wot other games have u tried? Benchmark scores?
Yeah I uninstalled my Nvidia properly before, I might just backup my main drive and do a fresh format & install. I haven't tried any benchmark. I usually play GTA:SA at 1024x768, frame limiter off, and AA off. It's still laggy, even with some other games. I'll try one of those bench things quick.
I got it brand new for $113 shipped. I get around 15 - 35 FPS in GTA:SA with no AA on, Texture Quality set to Medium, the Draw Distance really short, pretty much everything for performance. In 1024 x 768 with 16-bit.
Thats way to slow, I was cranking along fine with my 9800pro @ way higher settings. I'd go for a nice fresh reinstall
Yeah and dont use 16bit mode either, i agree a nice Fresh install with latest ATI and Via drivers. Make sure you install your chipset drivers before installing your ATI card.
Okay, just got done with a fresh format & reinstall of windows. This is what I just did so far: Installed Latest VIA Chipset Drivers First Restarted Installed Lastest ATI 5.10 Catalyst Drivers Restarted After I restarted, I get this error that pops up and says "Cannot load CLI.exe". So I'm going to remove these 5.10 drivers and go back to the 5.9's cause those seem to be perfect for me. I do notice now though that one problem I had was the screen was kinda wobbley, like looking at hot pavement on a summer day, that heat blurr effect. Thats gone now so maybe this fixed my problem.
Did you get that off ebay? because they have one on ebay that run a 128bit memory interface. ...that would explain your difficulty http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-ATI-RADEON-...710239100QQcategoryZ40158QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem this one?
update your bios and install the latest via drivers for your mobo and don`t o/c the card till your sure it can handle it. P.S. i have an amd 2600+ with 1 gig of ddr 333 ram for $150 if intrested you can e-mail me at > tommyparzjr@netscape.net
Yea, I saw those selling on ebay. What a scam advertising as a 9800XT. A castrated 9800XT maybe. Wu Masta James - sounds like you may have one of those ebay cards that has the 128 bit memory instead of the 256 bit that a 9800XT would normally have. Theres a big performance difference if you like playing games on high resolution. I think the memory is also clocked at 500 MHz which is alot slower that the real 9800XT. I don't remember if it still has the full 8 pipelines or the core speed but I'm gonna check. Here is the specs. Specifications: Chipset GPU Radeon 9800XT Core clock 400Mhz Memory Clock: 500Mhz PixelPipelines 8 Memory Size 256MB Memory Interface 128-bit Memory Type DDR 3D API DirectX DirectX 9 OpenGL OpenGL 2.0 Interface : AGP 4X/8X Ports :VGA & DVI &TV-Out S-Video Out
that error about the cli not loading is due to not having the microsoft netframe work 2.0 install on your system.
so in other words i got tricked. damn you ebay.....damn you!. lol i pretty much bought the same card as my geforce....but ati. thanks for filling me in about this guys. i will be on the look for a new video card again. nah i'm pretty happy with my system, i aien't looking to upgrade it right now. it gets the job done. i think i have the latest via bios, but i'll check just incase.
Yea, it will still game. Its probably performing somewhere between a 9600XT and a 9800XT - could be worse! I'm sure it will perform better than the 5600. You probably paid close to what a used 9800XT would have cost you though. You would have been much better off getting a used 9800XT but I wouldn't sweat it to much. E.
