    Hello guru's,
i am loooking to upgrade my graphics card, ive came across two cards that are at ruffly the same price, my first choice would have been the Leadtek WinFast GeForce 6800 128MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (AGP) , but i have heard that the Leadtek WinFast GeForce 6600 GT 128MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) is faster, what i want to know is if this is true, if so ill just get the 6600 gt,

heres a comparison between the 6600 gt and 6800
    http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20050524/vga_charts-05.html

thanks for all of your help

The only benefit to getting the 6800nu is the fact you can POSSIBLY unlock some extra pipes which will increase performance.

But considering its a new card you'll be buying, the chance of unlocking the pipes is low. They will more than likely be defective.

I would go with the 6600gt, just my personal preference.

i fully second dublin_gunner. The chances that you would be able to unlock those additional pipes on the 6800 are low, since these will be the newer lot. Owning a 6600GT myself, I would recommend that one anyday. As long as you don't play at insane resolutions with AA/AF pushed high, the 6600GT will perform quite satisfactorily, as any benchmark will tell you.

Recommend you go with the 6600GT.

Why not get the 6800 and over clock it?

You may be able to OC the core to maybe GT levels, but the slower ram wont be able to keep it fed with data. This is where the higher speed of the 6600gt's ram and core will make a difference between the 2.

I mean, why not OC the 6600gt too? And beat out the 6800nu altogether?

The performance difference between the 2 isn't great so I'd save some money and get the 6600GT. I agree with what Dublin_Gunner said really, I'm fairly lucky in that my 6800 can O/C quite well, its 10 months old now and I'm happy with it but I would have bought a 6600GT but the AGP version wasn't out at the time....

If your talking about AGP I would definitly go for the standard 6800 an then unlock it and overclock. I would recomend upgading your system 1st though...

Your looking at the wrong charts friend, those are the PCI-express charts, and the core of that 6800 is the nv41, not the nv40 that comes on AGP cards, you might want to look at this and I would go with the 6800nu, it performs better at higher resolutions and AA than the 6600GT due to the extra pipelines and 256bit memory bus, as the GT only has a 128bit memory bus

Especially if the pipes and vertex shaders are unlocked...

The 6800 is a little better, though the 6600GT comes close.

the 6800 has one other major benefit besides unlocking, namely the large increase in memory bandwith, this means the 6800 can handle AA a lot better then a 6600GT

personally id go with the 6800

Aa you are looking at a agp version go for the 6800nu. It IS faster than a 6600gt especially when you run filters (which you will). The 6600gt is crippled in comparison to the 6800 (at higher resolutions with filters enabled) due to the lack of pipelines and 128bit memory bus (fx5800ultra vs 9700 pro).

When looking at a comparison chart look at the higher resolutions with filters enabled because if you look at the lowest resolution settings most cards will be cpu limited

The 6600gt is still a great card though so if ou want to save right now get that.

    Hello again guru's,
thanks for your advice, i decided on getting a geforce 6600 gt but unfortunately i had problems with the card and was forced to return, to cut a long story short i got a full refund on the card because the place i bought the card doesn't replace faulty hardware just for some weirdo reason just refunds the item, so basically i have decided to save up some extra cash and possibly get a geforce 6800 gt card instead.

Again thanks for your help, sorry for my slow response

Or you could go as far as to wait a little bit when the 7800's go down but that would be admirable patience.

    Hey Th3kyle ,
that sounds like a cunning plan, a plan as cunning as a fox who has just graduated from the school of cunningness, what i will do is wait till the start of October to get a new graphics card, because just now i only have a geforce 4 420mx in my system :( ,

I would first start updating your system to handle such cards. Look around the net and u will find amd nf3 or k8t800pro motherboards (skt939) going cheap and u can find 6800 or 6800gt at very low prices too. I would buy the motherboard and processor before I upgraded my video card. That is what I would do. U can do whatever u want.

I probably should have gone for the 6800gt, but I'm happy with my 6800, it runs BF2 @1600x1200 medium/high settings no problems, but I really wish I would have had the money for the 256MB of memory the 6800gt has.

    Thanks for the quick responses,
just to fill you in on the system i have at present , it is a:

    Sempron 2800,
    abit nf8 socket 754 mobo,
    512mb of pc 3200 ram,
    40 gb hard drive,
    480 watt silent psu,
    17 “ crt monitor,
and a audigy 1 sound card.

Not a brilliant pc but I am strongly thinking of upgrading my system in October to something like this.

    A amd 64 3700+ ,
i might make the move to socket 939 and pci express but im not sure since i dont plan on getting more than one graphics card,
maybe get a new sound card but i don't know what to get, definitely not another creative labs sound card because there drivers are usualy crap
    a 200gb sata hard drive,
    1gb of ram,
i was thinking of getting the geforce 6800gt but if theres a 7800 series card or ati 520 series card thats around the £200 price tag in October, i may go for one them, i doubt they will be around that price tag but i will wait till October to get a new graphics card.

If i upgrade to the above it will be the last upgrade i plan on getting for a year or two.

    Thanks again for your advice.
