Hey guys, i recently won a new years giveaway prize as you can see in my sig below, and the prize was intitially a 6600 non-gt, but the guy whos paying for it gave me the option of taking his own 9800 pro (6 months old, BUILt by ATi, agp 8X) bcos hes getting a new system with pci-e.

So im really confused about this decision, my initial option was the 6600 non-gt agp because even though its slower than the 9800 pro, it supports the latest features and i am upgrading from a 5200 so its a huge upgrade...hehe The 6600 non-gt agp card in question is HERE

The one above is a leadtek, with 128mb ram, while i also saw another one HERE

Which is an AOpen with 256mb ram, and only costs USD$17 more but i had a bad feeling about the AOpen card and its stock cooler and meagre package (check the pics on newegg).

SO the final questions are; should i get the:

    1. Leadtek nVIDIA GeForce 6600 Video Card, 128MB DDR, 128-Bit, DVI/HDTV-Out, AGP 8X, Model "A6600 128 TD" -RETAIL - USD$149.00

    2. AOpen nVIDIA GeForce 6600 Video Card, 256MB DDR, 128-Bit, DVI/TV-Out, AGP 8X, Model "GF 6600 DV256" -RETAIL - USD$156.00

    3. 9800 pro (6 months old, BUILT by ATi, agp 8X)

Another thing is that the 9800 Pro and the Leadtek 6600 non-gt agp require an extra molex power connection, so i had a look on my mobo and i dont see anymore free spaces for it, they are taken up by the HDD's/dvdrw I think.... SO what do i do about that??

    pls reply asap.

    THX in advance :) :D

    ST.x :D

The 6600, because its new technology, which includes SM 3.0

But they both(6600 and 9800) score the same in 3d MARK.

they all require an extra molex connector i believe

    this is a tuffy......

I think the 9800 Pro is better but if your like me I dont like using other peoples used stuff and prefer my own brand new one

which i would go with the Aopen 6600 with 256megs

see if you can give him the extra 30-50 bucks and grab a 6600GT which would defently be the best choice an since im guessing your mobo has a AGP slot I would not get an XFX 6600GT AGP as they have some problems, but yeah i would pay the extra 30-50 bucks for the GT

6600's overclock fairly well. I'd get that over a used R9800pro.

You guys must be retarded, i dont know, maybe its just me, but it is newer technology, but a non GT is NOT better than 9800pro. I do not believe so. The memory is 128bit fpr the 6600, the 9800pro's is 256, and i believe they have the same number of pipelines? If your simply looking to overclock then i guess go for the 6600, but the non GT will probably not outperform a 9800 pro, even if it is used, what difference does that make? Its not a car or a bike or some kind of sex toy, if its been in a computer and working, it will be fine.

well as i mentioned i dont have any more remaining slots for the extra molex connection so is there a solution to that without getting a new mobo? And also the Aopen doesnt need an extra molex connection as i checked out the pics on newegg, so thats a plus for it.

About the 6600GT, could it be a bottleneck for my ageing system?

Could be a bottleneck, but probably not a big one, i wouldnt worry about it, should be fine, and what does a new mobo have to do with a molex connecter, just get a new PSU (power supply) with more connecters and more power to juice that sucker up nice. Or get more connecters?

A regular 6600 can suck on a 9800pros left nut, because it doesnt have anything besides your petty clock rates. Now a 6600GT thats some fair competition, but i'd still rather have the 9800 pro until i see benchmarks proving such nonsense, but then again it is newer technology, i dunno maybe if the heatsink on the 6600GT looks sexxier than ATi's plain ass sh*t.

Either will be a massive improvement, at stock the 9800 Pro will be a tad faster, but depending on what sort of clocks you can get out of the 6600 that *might* just outpace it.

Personally, if its a prize, id rather have something brand new, so would chose the 6600 (and its more cutting edge from a tech pov too which is always nice), although I do have a 9800 Pro in my second rig bought second hand and its a very sturdy card with no issues as yet.

Obviously the 6600GT would be the best choice if its an available option as that is faster then both 6600 and 9800 Pro at stock.

As I said before, eitehr way is a huge improvement so there isnt really a bad choice as such. Have fun with whichever you get. :)

    would i need?

And which 6600 non-gt agp card do you guys actually recommend? the leadtek or the AOpen (check first post for links on newegg) :)

Now looks who's nuts. A 6600gt is better than a 9800pro. Heck, it even bests a 9800xt in most cases.

I am a little leery of purchasing used equipment unless I know the seller personally. Still, the 9800 Pro is at least equivalent to the vanilla 6600, plus the image quality will be better. Even the newer Nvidia cards like the 6600GT I have are sensitive with respect to drivers, and you have to make compromises between frame rates and image quality. Although IMO the ATI cards are overpriced in the market right now, they do make a good quality product.

Excellent choice. That card is better than the 9800pro.

Cogar, I totally agree. My second card (used to be primary) is a 9800pro flashed to an XT. Great card. The image quality is excellent. I live with my girlfriend, and its in her PC now. She loves it.

    I agree.

Yes, I had 3 ATI cards prior to changing over to NVIDIA. As you said, the ATI image quality is excellent. My wife inherited my ATI card. Since she is not into games, she is very happy.

Hell, even if she was into gaming...its still a good card. My girlfriend plays them occasionally. I was playing Doom3 on it initially, before I got my 6800, and it ran great on my amd64. High quality, 1024x768. Beautiful image quality. It would occasionally take a fps dive in complex rendering areas with heavy fighting. But for the most part, it was great.
