What´s this "rust" on the condensators around the cpu?

    Anyone who knows?

    Edit:
This is the board in question: Jetway 830CF

    Do you mean "capacitors"?

If you have stains/markings around the ends of the capicitors where they meet the PCB, it means they are bad/leaking.

I noticed that you list an Abit board in your system specs. In the US, Abit is is facing a class action suit over this very thing with older boards.

Yep big issue industry-wide. google for "leaking caps"

It is from peeps moving the caps around bending them.If it is rust maybe the cpu had a peltier on it in the past.Did you buy it new or ebay.Did it ever have water cooling on it?

    Oh i´m sorry, it´s not my abit-board, it´s an old jetway 830CF.
Was gonna fix a friends system which suffered from random freezing.
I checked the mb after several failed os installs and noticed the leakage on the "caps".

Oh the the system hasn´t been tampered with in anyway, been the same since first put together roughly 2 years or so ago.

The leaking is ontop of the caps...looks like..hrm..the pointy things "growing" in caves, stalagmites or stalactites or whatever they´re called, but more "pile-like", really weird. I had a soltek-card a while ago which also had stains on the caps but not this much.

What I wanna know now is if this can be the cause of the freezing.

Sound like it could be the case. I've never heard of Jetway, but you might want to Google around and see if they have a capacitor leakage problem.

Incidentally, I should have said that capacitors can leak from either end. When they do leak, it almost always results in problems.

It is very common for bad caps to cause strange stability issues. Depending on which caps, they can even cause the MOSFET's themselves to overheat and fail.

Ok, so I switched boards and now the system works like a charm.
Thanx for the input, guys! =)

For the love of....ok.....well it was worse actually. Besides the bulging, about to explode kinda look, there was severe, hardened leakage on top of them. I´ll try and take a pic with my crapo camera later and post the pics.

yep I got two ABit boards, both did the same thing to me. Does anyone know if they will take them back? Granted these things are like 4 years old now, but heck I could still strap a cheapo AthlonXP in there if I could get 'em repaired and use the system for something.

Anyone know? abit originally said they wouldn't take the system back without a receipt. I never kept them. :-(

I´ll just state for reference that the board in question was a Jetway 830CF that had the leakage. My ABIT board has none.

I have repaired many boards thus afflicted. All you need is a

Check with the manufactor of your motherboard about a free repair or replacement. I've read Abit, ASUS, MSI and others are offering this service at no charge on these boards with the defective caps. There was a class action lawsuit settlement but most of the companies did and do fix the motherboards at no charge. I guess you do have to pay to ship it to them though.

I've repaired caps a couple of times..
It's a bit harder than it looks, and you'll have to be careful you don't burn any components around the cap. A low power soldering iron is safest.

Finding the proper caps can be problematic too..
For the trouble though, I'd just send it back.
If it's using known bad caps, they should be willing to replace or repair it, receipt or not.
