    Would the performance increase be worth it?. I pretty much only do multiplayer and i dont sit there and look at walls and be amazed at how good the quality is. I get good FPS but want better.

    you might get a little increase, but the water would look HORRIBLE.

    Also, your RAM might be a bit of a bottleneck, so i dunno.

    Are you familiar with the method people used to force DX9
    in Half Life 2? I think you could use that method and go backwards. Search around for the thread and it will tell you.

    you can also force pixel shaders, but that makes things incredibly ugly.

    no difference at all between 8 and 9 after running the test i saw. Everything looks the same pretty much unless you sit there and actually stare at something.

    going to 7 made the water ugly though 40fps more though

    i'm pretty sure you can do it through your registry , launch options ( -dxlevel xx ) , or in console (~) mat_dxlevel xx

    70 = dx7
    80 = dx8
    81 = dx8.1
    90 = dx9

    I wonder if the 6600 series will give any benefit running DX8, though. It's optimized for DX9 performance, unlike the Geforce FX.

    Yeah even my Ti4600 runs HL2 fine in its native DX8.1
