Well it's time to upgrade again:mad: and am looking for the best solution. Third generation games are now way out of my reach, 10 fps on doom 3. I plan to upgrade my cpu first to see if reilieving bottle necks will do the trick, but if not i plan to upgrade my video card too. Currently the max cpu my mobo can handle is 3000+, which i can get for $166 retail. Should i go with the 3000+? What video card should i get?

instead of spending 166 on a 3000+ why not get a barton 2500 or 2600 and get a good cooling solution and overclock?? you can buy the Thermalright SI-97 and a good 80MM fan for it for ~50$ and you can get a 2500 or 2600 for ~75-80$

just a thought, but if you dont want to overclock then its not worth it to do it this way.

Well I can get a 3000+ OEM for about $111 and add 50 bucks for a better cooling system. It would actual be cheaper then retail. Would it be worth overclocking it. Any other ideas on a video card.

P.S.Oops posted this in wrong forum.

Well, 6800 Gt is <$400, it's the best choice.

yeah, actually x800. The X850 is going to be pci express only.

save your money alittle longer get an fx-55 64 bit cpu and a 6800gt, you will not be dissappointed. better things come to them that wait.

He would have to buy a new motherboard to get that as you need a socket 939 motherboard to get a FX 55 cpu and they cost heaps, 3000+ cpu is still not bad.

    $1550 for asus a8v delux , fx-55, and 6800gt, and 2 corsair pc 3200 512 sticks.
not bad for a super fast solution.

I would recommend a mobile, but thats with good cooling. ;) Newegg has some. A mobile 2400+ 35 watter is about 80 bucks. Those are real nice and overclock pretty good MOST of the times. For video card I would recommend the 6800GT.

I heard somewhere that 6800 gets better framerates but because of it's features the x800 has better image quailty. Any truth to that? Also which version x800 do you need to softmod to a x800 xt? What are the chances the 4 unlocked pipelines are bad causing artifacts. Am i asking to many questions? Should i buy an amd 3000+ and overclock it?

the 6800gt gets better frames then the x800pro cause it has 16 pixel pumping pipelines, the x800pro only has 12. ati still renders games with a little better image quality, because their aa, af features are more refined, both will run any game well. softmode is for the x800pro to unlock the other 4 pipes and extra shaders. if you do a softmode corrrectly it should be identically as fast as a real x800xt pe with no artifacts.

Well I'm set as far as video card, but what about processor. Should i get a 3000+ retail for $166 or should i get a oem chip and diffrent cooling system and try to overclock it. Any ideas for cooling options?

well if you have 600 bucks to spend, then I would recommend this type of upgrade:

MB- DFI Lanparty UT - $107,
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-136-147&depa=1
    \
    CPU- AMD A-64 3200-$193,
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-483&depa=1

    Graphics card- Evga 6800 128mb- $285
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-130-202&depa=1

This comes in at $585, you could drop back to the 2800 and the 6600gt and save about $150 and get some pc3200 ram.

This system would set you up for a while.

The 6800 route is the way to go if you game. It is well worth the extra $70.

PS: Doom 3 FPS would be in the 50's at maxed settings and 1280x1024. I mean really nice.:D

You could even sell your old parts in the 'for sale' section here, and get some cash back to help out.

IMO, and I think most would agree, this would be a much better upgrade path to take with $600. This system would SMOKE your present system upgrade. :p

    Really.....Check it out.

EDIT: If you get the graphics card that you are looking at, and STAY with the 3000 and pc2700 ram, Your graphics card will be seriously BoTTLENECKED.

Even the A64's bottleneck the top-end graphic cards.

I don't believe you would see the performance that you would hope for after spending $600.

I think the 3000+ OEM, some nice cooling, a decent overclock and an 6800 GT is an excellent option. :)

you should get a mobile, trust me. i bought a 2500 barton and it wasn't even worth it, right now its running at 3200 and that's the cpu's max, if i had a 2500 or 2600 mobile i would probably have it at 2.5 to 2.7 gigahertz.

I believe he would need a better board and better ram in order to do that....he has pc2700 ram.
